Week 5 Challenge
Answer –1
Aim- To determine PG web thickness for given load without stiffener.
Procedure –
- Check shear buckling requirement limit.
- Minimum thickness of web requirement
- Shear capacity check
- Design of shear buckling
Calculation and check as per attachment-

Result- Web is not adequate to carry a factored shear force of 1000 KN
Answer -2
Aim-
- To Check intermediate web stiffener required for this plate girder for carry shear force 2000 kN
- To Calculate stiffener spacing
Given data- Size of PG – 1500x500x30x12
shear force- 2000 Kn
Procedure –
- Check shear buckling limit
- Minimum web thickness limit
- Check shear capacity
- Check shear buckling due to shear stress corresponding to web buckling .
- Check requirement of stiffener limit
- Calculate bearing capacity
- Calculate slenderness ratio
- Calculate spacing of intermediate stiffener
Calculation and check as per attachment-

Result- Intermediate stiffener is required for the given plate girder to resist shear force of 2000 KN and stiffener spacing is 2000 mm C/C.
Answer- 3
Aim- Check PG web safe in shear if web thickness increased.
Calculation and check as per attachment-

Result – After increase web thickness, it is safe in shear.
Answer -4
Aim-
- To calculate Minimum depth and web thickness of a beam with given span and load
- To calculate Flange depth and thickness of assumed section is also to be found out to carry moment
Procedure –
- Load calculation
- Calculate max shear force and Bending moment
- Design of web size check
- Design of flange size and check
- Check classification of section
- Check for moment capacity
Calculation and check as per attachment-

Result- Plate girder is capable to bear max bending moment.
