Week 3 Verification of Weld Joints
Aim:
To simulate three different types of welding using three different weld materials ( Stainless Steel, Aluminium Alloy, Bronze).
Software:
ANSYS Workbench - 2020 R2
Geometry:

Mesh:
Mesh Size = 5 mm.

1. Material: Stainless steel
The applied load is 1500 N
Directional Deformation:

- Maximum deformation in the Y-Axis is 0.33048 mm
Equivalent stress:

- The maximum equivalent stress is 353.3 Mpa on the small plate and 318.33 Mpa on the welded joints.
2. Material: Aluminium Alloy
Directional Deformation:

- The Maximum deformation in the Y-Axis is 0.095385 mm
Equivalent stress:

- The maximum equivalent stress is 359 Mpa on the small plate and 259.1 Mpa on the welded joints.
3. Material: Bronze
Directional Deformation:

- The Maximum deformation in the Y-Axis is 0.15868 mm
Equivalent stress:

- The maximum equivalent stress is 129.35 Mpa on the small plate and 66.937 Mpa on the welded joints.
Comparison:
| Material | Directional deformation (mm) | Equivalent stress (MPa) | Equivalent stress on weld joints (MPa) |
| Stainless steel | 0.33048 | 353.3 | 318.33 |
| Aluminium Alloy | 0.095385 | 359 | 259.1 |
| Cast Bronze | 0.15868 | 129.35 | 66.937 |
- From the observation above table, we can conclude that using the Cast Bronze material the equivalent stress developed on the welded joints is less compared to stainless steel and Aluminium alloy.
