Challenge

Week 3 Verification of Weld Joints

Objective:  In this challenge, we will perform static structural analysis on a structure connected by welded joints.  Here we consider three cases with three different materials for welds.

Case1: Stainless Steel, Case2: Aluminium Alloy, Case3: Bronze.

We will compare the stresses generated in welds for the above three cases under the load of 15 KN.

Geometry:

The given structure is as shown in fig. below.

Material:

1) Stainless Steel

2) Aluminium Alloy

3) Bronze

Contacts:

The Contact Between Plates and Ribs is Frictional with a coefficient of friction of 0.2. And others are Bonded.

Frictional Contacts:

As all surfaces are flat we need not worry about Contact and Target faces.

Mesh:

As all bodies are sweepable we have used the "Sweep" Method with a body sizing of 7 mm.

Analysis Settings:

We have used the Frictional Contact which is Non-linear in nature so turn on the Large Deflection to capture the non-linear effect during the analysis.

Boundary Conditions:

We have used "Fixed Support" as per the requirement.

Loading Condition

We have applied a load of 15 KN at the center of the small plate.

Results

1) Stainless Steel Welds

a) Directional Deformation

b) Equivalent Stress

c) Equivalent Strain

d) Equivalent Stress at welds

2) Aluminium Alloy Welds

a) Directional Deformation

b) Equivalent Stress

c) Equivalent Strain

d) Equivalent Stress at welds

3) Bronze Welds

a) Directional Deformation

b) Equivalent Stress

c) Equivalent Strain

d) Equivalent Stress at welds

Conclusion

Material  Max.Directional Deformation ( in mm) Max. Equivalent Stress (in MPa) Max. Equivalent Strain Max. Equivalent Stress at welds (in MPa)
Stainless Steel 0.31858 308.15 1.6117e-003 234.45
Aluminum Alloy 0.33156 312.28 2.5638e-003 188.85
Bronze  0.33035 312.21 2.404e-003 191.92

 1) There is not much difference between the stresses generated in the structure.

 2) The stresses in welds with Steel are higher than the Aluminium Alloy and Bronze

     For weld Stresses in Case1> Case3> Case2

Hence, The weld made up of Aluminium Alloys has the Lowest stresses generated so Aluminium is the suitable material for designing the welds.
