Week 3 Verification of Weld Joints
VERIFICATION OF WELD JOINTS
Objective :-
1. Undertake the statice structural simulation on RailWheel and Tracks
2. Run the simulation for a load of 15000N that is to be applied at the rectangular hole in the small plate.Compare the the Directional Deformation and equivalent strain experienced by the setup and Identify the weld joint that experiences the highest equivalent stress in each case and compare the results for all three cases for the following cases
(a)Stainless Steel: In this case, the material of the plates must also be the same. Use Stainless steel for both weldments and plates. No need to add flux to the weldments.
(b) Aluminium Alloy:The material to be chosen for this case is Aluminium alloy(high strength, wrought). [Plate material to be used is stainless steel]
(C) Bronze: In order to simulate "Brazing", you should be using bronze as the weld material. Assign Stainless Steel to both plates and Copper to the "Ribs".
CAD

Procedure
Preprocessor
1. Static Structural module was selected in ansys work bench.
2. The CAD geometry was imported in the work bench and the material was assigned as structural Steel.
3. The Setup has five contactsbetween Big plate, Small plate Rib 1 and Rib 2. The contacts between them was assigned as frictional with coef 0.2.
4. Another step is to Mesh the model with sizing 7mm.

5. For the joints between the CADs
(a) All the circular holes was give the fixed supports.
(b) The rectangular hole was constrained with 15000N loads
7. Solution for following parameters were selected for analysis
(a) Directional deformation
(b) Equivalent Stress on the welds

RESULTS
|
Cases |
Directional Deformation (mm) |
Equivalent Stress on Welds (Mpa) | Equivalent Stress on Plates (Mpa) |
| 1 | 0.34015 | 303.73 | 337.01 |
| 2 | 0.35517 | 249.8 | 341.95 |
| 3 | 0.38125 | 278.23 | 345.63 |
CONCLUSIONS
1. It can be seen from the table above that deformation in Case 3 is maximum
2. It can be seen that Max Stress Developed on the Welds in Case 1
3. In case 3 the plate has developed maximum Stress.
