Week - 3 Drop test Challenge

Aim: Create the solver deck and perform the simulation of the phone falling on the ground vertically.

Procedure:

1)Given the keyword file extracted from the meshing.( Hypermesh)

2)First add a material to the part. So, using the 001_elastic in the MAT group, Rho=7.83e-3, E=2.07e5, PR=0.3. (Units: g, mm, ms)

3)Shell section and the solid section are created which represents the plate, Ground and phone respectively.

4)Both section ID and the Material ID is assigned to the part.

5)Now assigning the boundary conditions. In the Drop test, the Ground is kept rigid and the phone drops vertically on to the ground. For the Ground part, SPC condition is assigned, where the node set is created and all the 6 DOFs of these nodes are arrested. As the phone is moving object, all the DOFs are arrested expect in Z-direction. The measured distance between the Phone and the plate is 24 units, a time of 10 units is assumed to calculate the velocity of the phone to reach the ground. So, velocity keyword is assigned with a value of -2.4 units.

6)A control termination is assigned with a value of 10 units and the time step of 1 unit.

7)Finally a Automatic single surface contact is given to stop the motion of the phone from passing through the ground.GLSTAT (ASCII plot)is specified to obtain the energy results and binary d3plot, these keywords are assigned in the database.

8)Modified Keyword file is attached below.

9)After saving the file, a run is performed.

Conclusion:

1) Kinetuc energy plot of the system is shown. It shows initial Kinetic energy as 2.6e3 which is same as calculated Kinetic energy (K.E=1/2*m*v^2).

2)From the plot we can say that, until 7ms the phone was in motion and later the velocity gradually gets reduced because of the contact with the ground (as shown in the above image) and by 9ms the velocity becomes zero so is the K.E.
