Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool
QUESTION -
Use ADVISOR tool and simulate the following
- For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.
- In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.
- Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file Compare your results in table and conclude.
SOLUTION 1 -
As given in the challenge that select the EV_defaults_in file and consider the Cargo mass is 500Kg so, we select Load file and change the Cargo mass of the vehicle to 500Kg which is shown in below.

The Drive cycle is selected as CYC_FTP which is already given in the challenge. The distance of 1 cycle of CYC_FTP drive cycle is 17.33Km which is shown in below data.As we want to know that this FTP drive cycle can travel to 45Km or not ,so that 3 Cycles are selected as shown in below.

Below graph shows the results of the vehicle considering all the input conditions.

Observation -
As 3 FTP cycles are applied to the vehicle which can covered the distance approximately more than 51Km still the Vehicle cannot run above the 41.4Km distance which is shown in the result. It means that , if we change the number of cycles the distance will not changed it remains contant to 41.4Km.
Because after the distance of 41.4 Km the battery depletes. so that's why we can not travel the distance of 45Km with this vehicle model. This vehicle model travel the maximum distance of 41.4Km shown in the result as above.
SOLUTION 2 -
Here we change the battery capacity of the above model. The battery capacity changed by changing the battery model shown in below. Here battery module is changed to 20.
Battery Module is 20 -

The drive cycle is CYC_FTP and the number of cycles selected as 1 shown in below. The acceleration, gradeability test and all other conditions which are not selected are not considered while running the vehicle model.

Results -
Below graph shows the speed ,SOC, Emission and Overall ratio plots.

Battery Module is 27-

Results -

Battery Module is 30 -

Here number of cycles are selected as 3 and the Drive cycle is same as above i.e CYC_FTP.

Results -

Observation -
When the Battery module is 20 then the battery dischanged at nearly 0.5 of SOC .But when we increase the Battery module to 27 the battery discharges slowly and it works above 0.6 of SOC.The distance travelled is constant as 17.8Km in both the cases.
But when we change the Battery module to 30 and considering the number of cycles as 3 , then the distance is changed to 49.1Km. As we are seen in Case 1 ,this vehicle can not run at more than 41.4 Km but by increasing the battery capacity it will run to 49.1Km.It is the important point in taking observation of the model.
SOLUTION 3 -
Selecting the Vehicle model PRIUS_JPN_defaults_in , given in the challenge.

To perform gradeability test we have to change the speed of the vehicle. Here 30mph speed is selected which is shown in below window and it is applied to vehicle for 10 sec duration.

Results -

Gradeabilityof Vehicle at Speed 50mph -

Results -

Observation -
We can easily understand the change in gradeability by changing speed from below data.
speed(mph) Gradeability(%)
30 14.7
50 9.7
From the above data we observe that, Gradeability is inversely proportional to the Speed. At low speed the gradeability is high and at high speed the gradeability is less.So we can conclude that Gradeability is highest at a lower speed than at high speed.
