Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool

Aim: to use the ADVISOR tool for simulation.

ADVISOR: This tool stands for 'Advanced Vehicle simulator which is used for different types of vehicles such as some ic engine-based and electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles, and fuel cell-based vehicles, this tool is very useful.

1. For the EV_defaults_in file, if the cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with an FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.

load the ADVISOR TOOL from the MatLab command window and the select metric system, load the EV_default_in file and change the cargo weight to 500 and keep the remaining variables the same, and hit continue to load the drive cycle page.

Now, select the drive cycle data file as 'CYC_FTP'-Federal Test procedure

we need to run the simulation till the state of Charge (soc)is completed ie,100%

Running the simulation with the drive cycle:

output:

we can observe the distance traveled by the vehicle is 17.8 km.

The SOS value 1 means 100% charged, while at the start of the cycle the SOC is 1 at the end SOC is '0.6'means, and only 40% of the energy was utilized by the vehicle for 1 drive cycle.

Running the simulation with 2 drive cycles:

outputs:

we can observe the distance traveled by the vehicle is 35.5 km.

82% of the energy was utilized by the vehicle for 2 drive cycles.

Running the simulation with 3 drive cycles:

out puts:

we can observe the distance traveled by the vehicle is 41.4km

'0' means, 100% of the energy was utilized by the vehicle for 3 drive cycles.

Number of distances traveled state charge utilized state of charge reminder(%)

the drive cycle (km)

1 17.8 40 60

2 35.5 82 18

3 41.4 100 0

as per the condition, the vehicle can not reach the 45km mark it can reach only 41.4 km with a 3-drive cycle (FTP)because after reaching 41.4km the SOC is '0'

2. In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.

with the same vehicle file, we can change the battery capacity (#of mod) with 2 and 3 drive cycles and observe the results.

a) Energy storage with 26 modules and 2 drive cycle

output:

b) Energy storage with 32 modules and 2 drive cycles.

output:

2 Drive cycles

No. of voltage battery distance distance

modules weight (miles) (kmph)

(kg)

26 321 286 22.1 35.5

32 395 395 22.1 35.5

Here, we can observe that by increasing the number of energy storage modules the distance traveled by the

the vehicle is almost constant i.e. 35.5km.

c)Energy storage with 35 modules and 3 drive cycle

output:

No. of

modules voltage battery Distance Distance

weight (miles) (kmh)

(kg)

35 432 385 33.1 53.3

by increasing the battery capacity we can see that the range has been increased to 53.3km which is more then

the required range we need.

3. Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file

Compare your results in a table and conclude.

select 'PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in ' to load the file option to load the Prius model

Press the continue button, the simulation setup window will open, in that check the Gradeability Test and click

on the grade options.

the speed and time boxes are checked by default and click on the ' all system enabled 'button.

now we need to change speed and time so, the gradability percentage can be changed value can be changed.

speed from 30-60 mph and 10 second

after running the Prius model with different speeds we can check the gradability percentage,

speed speed Gradeability

(mph) (kmph) (%)

30 48.3 2.5 %

40 64.4 2.5%

55 88.5 1.7%

60 96.6 1.5 %

From the above table, we can observe the gradability, so we can conclude that gradability is highest at a lower speed than at high speeds

CONCLUSION:

  • we learned the uses of the Advisor tool.
  • we calculated the range of the default vehicle model for 500kg mass.
  • we also checked the distance traveled for the different modules of the batteries.
  • also performed a gradability test for the 'PRIUS_JPN_default_in'
