Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool

Aim: To simulate the given data of EV in a ADVISOR tool of MATLAB.

Objective:

  1. For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.
  2. In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.
  3. Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file. Compare your results in table and conclude.

Theory:

ADVISOR, NREL’s ADvanced VehIcle SimulatOR, is a set of model, data, and script text files for use with Matlab and Simulink. It is designed for rapid analysis of the performance and fuel economy of conventional, electric, and hybrid vehicles. ADVISOR also provides a backbone for the detailed simulation and analysis of user defined drivetrain components, a starting point of verified vehicle data and algorithms from which to take full advantage of the modeling flexibility of Simulink and analytic power of MATLAB.

Work of advisor tool are:

  • estimate the fuel economy of vehicles that have not yet been built
  • learn about how conventional, hybrid, or electric vehicles use (and lose) energy throughout their drivetrains
  • compare relative tailpipe emissions produced on a number of cycles
  • evaluate an energy management strategy for your hybrid vehicle’s fuel converter
  • optimize the gear ratios in your transmission to minimize fuel use or maximize performance, etc.

GUI of an Advisor tool.

Q1) For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.

Changing the Cargo mass to 500 kg in EV_defaults_in

After pressing the run button the simulation will start and results will show in next GUI.

we observed that the distance travelled by vehicle in 1 drive cycle is 17.8km.

Now, increasing the no. of drive cycle to 2 and run

we observed that the distance travelled is 35.5 km

now, increasing the drive cycle to 3 and run

here, in drive cycle 3 we observed that vehicle travelled 41.4 km and used all its SOC also, the warning message is there that required distance exceeded the EV range.

Results and Conclusion:

The minimum distance travel by the vehicle is 17.8 km with drive cycle CYC_FTP_1 whereas the maximum distance travel is 41.4 km which consumes 100% battery in 3 drive cycle.

Thus we concluded that EV_default_in cannot travel distance of 45 km due to insufficient SOC.

Q2. In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.

i) Checking results by changing the no. of modules to 26 and 2 drive cycle ,voltage changes to 321V

In this case vehicle travels 35.5 km

ii) Checking results by changing the no. of modules to 27 and 2 drive cycle, valtage is 333V

In this case vehicle travels 35.5 km

iii) Checking results by changing the no. of modules to 28 and 2 drive cycle, voltage is 345V

In this case vehicle travels 35.5km

iv) Checking results by changing the no. of modules to 26 and 3 drive cycle ,voltage changes to 321V

In this case distance travels is 42.7km

v) Checking results by changing the no. of modules to 27 and 3 drive cycle, valtage is 333V

in this case distance travel is 44.8km

vi) Checking results by changing the no. of modules to 28 and 3 drive cycle, voltage is 345V

In this case distance travel is 46.3 km.

Conclusions:

  • While changing the battery module in drive cycle 2 we get a constant distance travel that is 35.5 km
  • Changing the battery module in drive cycle 3 we got variation in distance travel that is 42.7, 44.8 and 46.3 km in 26 ,27 and 28 no. of modules.
  • So we concluded that in order to cover a distance of 45km a 28 module 345 volt battery is required.

3. Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file Compare your results in table and conclude.

For the duration of 10 seconds we will change the speed and check the gradeability.

i) for 35 mph or 56.3kmph

gradeability is 13%

ii) for speed 40 mph or 64.4 kmph

gradeabilty is 11.7%

iii) for speed 45 mph or 72.2 kmph

gradeabilty is 10.7%

iv) for speed 50 mph or 80.5 kmph

gradeability is 9.7%

Table for duration 10 seconds

S. no. speed mph speed kmph gradeability
1 35 56.3 13%
2 40 64.4 11.7%
3 45 72.2 10.7%
4 50 80.5 9.7%

For the duration 20 seconds.

v) for speed 35 mph or 56.3 kmph

gradeability = 16%

vi) for speed 40 mph or 64.4 kmph

gradeabity = 14.6%

vii) speed = 45 mph or 72.2 kmph

gradeabity = 13.4%

viii) speed = 50 mph or 80.5 kmph

gradeability = 12.4%

Table for the duration 20 seconds.

S. no. speed mph speed kmph Gradeability
1 35 56.3 16%
2 40 64.4 14.6%
3 45 72.2 13.4%
4 50 80.5 12.4%

Conclusion:

From the above tables we conclude that when vehicle speed increases there is a decrease in gradeability for both 10 sec and 20 sec durations.
