ADVISOR Tool

AIM: The aim of this challenge is to simulate the mentioned conditions using the ADVISOR tool.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this challenge is to simulate a pure EV car using the ADVISOR tool with the following conditions:

1. Cargo mass is 500 kg

2. To check if the vehicle travel for 45 km with the FTP drive cycle.

ADVISOR TOOL: The Advance Vehicle Simulator Tool is a MATLAB/Simulink based simulation program for rapid analysis of the performance and fuel economy of light and heavy-duty vehicles with conventional (gasoline/diesel), hybrid-electric, full-electric, and fuel cell powertrains. It was created by the National Laboratory for Renewable Energy(NREL) and the Department of Energy, USA.

It follows the backward flow, that is the first model is the driving cycle and then energy storage

INPUT:

EV_defaults_in was selected in the load file tab to load the pure EV power train for simulation.

The number of battery modules was 25 and cargo mass was set to 500, which brought the total mass to 1508Kg. Lead was used as the storage element and the battery weight came up to 275Kg.

The drive cycle of the vehicle was set as FTP and the number of cycles was set as 4.

RESULT:

In the results tab, the variation in vehicle speed was seen with respect to time and how its State of Charge depleted.

The vehicle was not able to cover 45Km and the SOC reached 0 at the end of 41.4kM.

CASE 2:

For the second case, the number of modules was increased to 30 from 25.

The vehicle was able to travel 49.1 Kms after increasing the battery capacity to 370V from 308V.

PRIUS:

GRADE TEST:

Case 1:

Speed of 55Mph for 10s

Gradeability of 1.7% was achieved at 55Mph.

Case 2:

Speed of 60Mph for 10s

Gradeability of 1.5% was achieved at 60Mph.

Case 3:

Speed of 65Mph for 10s

Gradeability of 1.2% was achieved at 65Mph.

Case 4:

Speed of 40Mph for 10s

Gradeability of 2.5% was achieved at 40Mph.

From the above results, we can concur that Gradeability decreases as speed increases. And for all the cases the vehicle was able to maintain the SOC at or above 50%.
