Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool
ADVISOR, NREL’s ADvanced VehIcle SimulatOR, is a set of model, data, and script text files for use with Matlab and Simulink. It is designed for rapid analysis of the performance and fuel economy of conventional, electric, and hybrid vehicles. ADVISOR also provides a backbone for the detailed simulation and analysis of user defined drivetrain components, a starting point of verified vehicle data and algorithms from which to take full advantage of the modeling flexibility of Simulink and analytic power of MATLAB.
You may benefit from using ADVISOR if you want to:
- estimate the fuel economy of vehicles that have not yet been built
- learn about how conventional, hybrid, or electric vehicles use (and lose) energy throughout their drivetrains
- compare relative tailpipe emissions produced on a number of cycles
- evaluate an energy management strategy for your hybrid vehicle’s fuel converter
- optimize the gear ratios in your transmission to minimize fuel use or maximize performance, etc.
The models in ADVISOR are:
- mostly empirical, relying on drivetrain component input/output relationships measured in the laboratory, and
- quasi-static, using data collected in steady state (for example, constant torque and speed) tests and correcting them for transient effects such as the rotational inertia of drivetrain components.
ADVISOR was preliminarily written and used in November 1994. Since then, it has been modified as necessary to help manage the US DOE Hybrid Vehicle Propulsion System subcontracts. Only in January 1998 was a concerted development effort undertaken to clean up and document ADVISOR.
Since then, over 4500 individuals have downloaded one or more versions of ADVISOR, including all of the OEMs and major suppliers. About 2/3 of the users are from industry and 1/3 from universities. A short list of major ADVISOR users includes:
- DaimlerChrysler
- Ford Motor Company
- General Motors Corp.
- Delphi Automotive Systems
- Visteon
- and hundreds of others
Q.1 For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.
From the question, it is observed that cargo mass should be 500Kg. Therefore, the calculated mass is 1508Kg.

- Click the continue button to enter the FTP Drive cycle.

- Click the Run button to plot the various parameters.

- From the above figure, it is observed that the distance traveled is 17.8Km.
Now the no.of drive cycles has been increased to 2. Then the corresponding waveforms as shown in the figure.

From the above Figure, it is observed that the distance traveled by the vehicle is 35.5Km.
Now the no. of drive cycles has been increased to 3. Then the corresponding waveforms as shown in the figure.

Conclusion: From the above Figure, it is observed that the distance traveled by the vehicle is 41.4Km. It is also observed that the SOC waveform reaches zero at 5500. There fore, for the further cycles(4) the vehicle won't move forward. The EV vehicle never reaches 45km with this SOC and drive cycle.
2.In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.
- By using vehicle input window we can change the battery capacity.

It is observed that in the previous case modules are 25 and now it has been changed into 26. For the 1 drive cycle. The results are showin in figure.

In this case again the distance travelled is 17.8 Km only. For the 2 drive cycles the corresponding waveform is as shown in figure.

From the above figure the speed is reached to 35.5 km. For the 3 drive cycles the results are shown in figure.

From the above figure it is observed that the speed is reached to 42.7km. Also the SOC reached zero at point 5800. Hence it is again decided that to change energy storage modules into 27.

For the 3 drive cycles, the results are shown in figure

From the above figure it is observed that the distance travelled is 44.8Km. Still 45km is not reached. There fore Energy storage modules again increased to 28.

Conclusion of question no 2: It is concluded that for 28modules of energy storage the distance travelled is 46.3Km.
3. Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file
Compare your results in table and conclude.

Results for the duration 10sec:
case i: 20miles/h or 32.2 Kmph
gradeability 19.8%

case ii: 25miles/h or 40.25 Kmph
gradeability 16.5%
case iii: 35miles/h or 56.35 Kmph

case iv: 45miles/h or 72.45 Kmph
gradeability 10.7%

In this question, a particular drive cycle is not mentioned. So we will go for another drive cycle.

It is observed that the gradeability is not depends on Drive cycle but it depends on mass and gravity.
- where, m = Total mass.
- g = Gravity.
- tanθ x 100 = gradeability.
