Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool
Use ADVISOR tool and simulate the following
1. For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other defaults conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.
Answer:
ADVISOR (Advanced Vehicle Simulator):
- This tool is designed by the National Laboratory of Renewable Energy and Department of Energy, USA.
- It is a set of model, set, data and script text files for use with Matlab and Simulink.
- It is a simulation program designed for rapid analysis of the performance and fuel economy of the conventional, electric and hybrid electric vehicle.
How to open the ADVISOR:
- First we have to open the matlab.
- Then add the default location of advisor tool to the current directory.
- Type the 'ADVISOR' in the command window.
- Then it opens the advisor start window.
- By clicking on the 'start' option it opens the vehicle input window.
- It shows the default window of the parallel hybrid electric vehicle as shown below.

Simulation of electric vehicle:
- From the 'Load File' option select EV_defaults_in vehicle which is pure electric vehicle.
- It shows all the default parameter with cargo mass of 136 kg.
- Here battery pack has total 25 number of module and its nominal voltage is 308 V.
- AC motor is used with maximum power rating of 75 kW and 92% efficiency.
- The transmission efficiency is 100%.
- The total weight of the vehicle including vehicle, battery, motor, transmission and cargo weight is 1144 kg.

- With this default condition, the vehicle is simulated for FTP driving cycle.
- One cycle is used here for simulation.
- The FTP driving cycle runs for only 2477 seconds.
- In this duration it covers the distance of 17.77 km with the average spped of 25.85 kmph and maximum speed of 91.25 kmph.

- The total distance covered is 17.8 km.
- With all the default parameters and FTP driving cycle, the battery is discharged from 100% to approximately 65%.

- Now the cargo weight is consider as 500 kg.
- So the total mass of the vehicle is now 1508 kg.
- All the parameters are kept as default as shown in below figure.

- The one FTP drive cycle only convers the distance of 17.78 km.
- Condition here is to check the vehicle for 45 km so three number of FTP drive cycles are taken as input.
- The three number of input drive cycle is shown in the below figure.

- From the result shown below, it is seen that the battery is discharge completely.
- The distance travelled here is 41.4 km as the battery discharged completely upto this distance.
- There is warning shown in the red colored box.
- The required 45 km distance exceeds the range of this vehicle that means the vehicle can not run 45 km with the given storage capacity.

2. In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.
Answer:

- As shown in above figure, the battery modules are changed from 25 to 35 in number.
- So the nominal voltage of battery is increased to 432 V.
- The weight of battery pack also increased to 385 kg, so the total weight of vehicle in this case is 1618 kg.
- The cargo weight and all other parameters are kept same as in above case.

- The above figure shows the result for simulation with increased storage capacity.
- The battery is discharged from 100% to 10%.
- The required distance of 45 km is achieved as the vehicle here travelled for 53.2 km.
- So by increasing the battery capacity we achieved our require result.
3. Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_lpn_defaults_in file
Compare your results in table and conclude.
Answer:

- The PRIUS_JPN_defaults_in modelis selected from the 'Load File' tab.
- The above window shows the Toyota Prius vehicle model.
- All the parameters are kept default.
- Now continue option is selected to go to next window for simulation parameters.

- Now in the above window, the UDDS drive cycle is selected for simulation.
- To perform the gradeability test, the gradeability option is selected and by clicking on grade option the parameter for grade option is changed.

- The above diagram shows the advanced options for gradeability test.
- The speed during gradeability test is selected as shown above.
- The speed of 5 mph is selected as shown.
- We have to select the 'All Systems Enabled' option as it is a hybrid vehicle.
- The gradeability is 32.8 % for the speed of 8 kmph as shown in the below figure.

- The below figure shows the gradeability is 24.4 % for 24.1 kmph speed.

- The few gradeability tests are performed and the result is shown in below table:
