Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool

Use the ADVISOR tool and simulate the following

1. For the EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.

2. In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.

3. Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file

Compare your results in a table and conclude

SOLUTION -

Drivetrain selection---

From the drivetrain popup menu, you will be able to select the drivetrain configuration of the vehicle (Series, Parallel, etc.) which will cause the schematic of the vehicle configuration in the left portion of the figure to change accordingly. This will also modify which components are available for the type of drivetrain chosen.

Selecting components---

After selecting the drivetrain configuration, all the components of the vehicle can be selected using the popup menus, or by clicking on the component in the picture. To the left of the component, the popup menu is a push button that will allow you to add or delete components by selecting their corresponding listed .m files. The m-file of a specific component can be accessed for viewing or modifying from either the component pushbutton or by clicking on the component of the picture.

1. For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, the vehicle can not travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle>>

In the ADVISOR tool there are various Simulink models of cars are present as output called simulation of vehicle that based on IC engine, Electric vehicle, and Hybrid vehicle. By using this tool many results are obtained. A change of the value of the motor, generator, battery capacity, and some other vehicle parameters are made by the advisor tool outputs are obtained by the run option. That dialog box is shown below-

Simulation Observation -

Cycle 1 -

Considering mass value as 500kg and cycle time 1

Cycle 2 -

Considering mass value as 500kg and cycle time 2

Cycle 3 -

Cycle 4 -

Considering mass value as 500kg and cycle time 4

EMMISSIONAs this is a pure EV and run with a power supply from a high voltage battery, it does not emit any gas in the atmosphere. Complete chemical energy has converted into electrical energy.

OBSERVATION -

By the observation 4 cycles of this model, the vehicle couldn't travel for 45 km with an FTP drive cycle. The maximum distance travel in the default model is 41.4 km. This maximum distance travel of the vehicle is obtained only by increasing the number of cycles. Cycle 3 is the maximum number of cycles in which the battery capacity is capable of acceleration. The battery is drained in number of cycle times 3
So the vehicle travel for 45 km with the FTP drive cycle is not possible by the default condition.

2. In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.

For Battery Module 5 -

For Battery Module 15 -

For Battery Module 30 -

For Battery Module 40 -

For Battery Module 50 -

Observation -

As the battery capacity is increasingly changing the battery module number we can see the distance travel by cycle of time is changing.The distance becomes constant for battery module 30 is 29.8km.

3. Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file

Change the Gradeability -

Press gradeability test and change the gradeability

Following are the output results :
Case 1 : Speed = 5mph (8kmph)
Gradeability = 18.1 %

Case 2 : Speed = 15mph (24.1kmph)
Gradeability = 26.4%

Case 3 : Speed = 20mph (32.2kmph)
Gradeability = 25.5%

Case 4 : Speed = 40mph (64.4kmph)
Gradeability = 12.6%

Hence, speeds of 15mph to 25mph give the highest gradeability value which makes them the optimum speeds for Prius.
