Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool

Q1. For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.

  • Ans -

This is modeled with EV_defaults_in with cargo mass 500 kg and FTP drive cycle and all other default conditions as shown below.

Drive cycle and other parameters setup:

  1. a) If only a single FTP drive cycle is used:

Output for above Model -

  • From figure above, the distance covered by vehicle under given conditions for single drive conditions is only 17.8 kms.
  1. b) If three FTP drive cycles are used:

  • From figure above, the distance covered by vehicle under given conditions for single drive conditions is only 41.4 kms.
  • Therefore, if we use three drive cycles the vehicle will not cover 45 kms because the state of charge becomes zeroafter 41.4 kms.
  • So, the vehicle will mot cover 45 km with FTP drive cycle.

Q2. In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.

  • Ans -

The battery capacity increased from 308V(25 modules) to 493V(40 modules) and all other parameters remains same as first model.

In this model, we use an FTP drive cycle.

  1. a) If only a single FTP drive cycle used

output -

  • From the figure above, the distance covered by vehicle under given conditions for single drive conditions is only 17.8 km. That is here only battery capacity increased.
  • So, the performance of the vehicle will be the same as the first model.
  • Only the difference is the state of charge(SOC).
  • In this case, the state of charge will decrease slowly compared to the first case.
  1. b) If three drive cycle FTP are used:

output -

  • Therefore, if battery capacity increases and uses three drive cycles, the vehicle will cover nearly 54 km.

Q3. Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file. Compare your results in the table and conclude.

  • Ans -

The model shown below is PRIUS_jpn_defaults_in and it is simulated with all default conditions and enabled gradeability test.

Gradeability test: This test is performed to know the % gradeability at a givren speed.

  1. i) when speed = 55 mph

  1. ii) when speed = 65 mph

iii) when speed = 75 mph

  1. iv) when speed = 85 mph

  1. v) when speed = 95 mph

  1. vi) when speed = 100 mph
