Challenge

Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool

1.For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.

Step1: After opening the ADVISOR tool, Change the "Load File" as 'EV_degaults_in' and also change the 'Cargo mass' into '500'. Click on the 'Continue' button.

Step2: Select the "Drive Cycle" as 'Cyc_FTP'. When we observe this Drive Cycle we understand that the distance traveled is 17.8km in one cycle. To observe changes for 45km we required to increase the number of Drive Cycle. Here we have given 3 DriveCycles 3*17.8 = 53.4km

Click RUN to see the output.

Result Analysis.

Here in the first plot, we can see the Drive Cycle

It is observed the Drive Cycle is only present for nearly 2.5 times.

In the second plot, we can observe that the vehicle State of Charge(SOC) is 0 at the point the drive cycle ends means that the vehicle comes to stop position.

The third plot shows the distance covered, the total distance covered can also be observed from the Right side window of the plot. It is displayed as 41.4km

Hence we can conclude that this particular, vehicle(EV_defaults_in) with this Drive Cycle(Cyc_FTP) cannot travel a distance of 45 km, state of charge will be 0 at 41.4km.

2. In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.

Step 1: In the above model Keeping the Load File as EV_defaults_in and Cargo Mass 500, change the Energy Storage.

Here Energy storage is changed to ESS_PB91_ucd.

Then Click on Continue.

Step2: Keep the Drive Cycle same as CYC_FTP, and no. of Cycles also as 3.

Then Click on RUN.

Result Analysis

From plot 1 We can observe that vehicle has successfully completed all the three Drive Cycles.

From plot 2 We can Observe the state of charge.(SOC) is still not 0 ie only below 70%, means that the vehicle can still move many more Kilometers.

From Plot 3 the distance can be observed. We can note the distance covered is 53.3km also from the right window.

The previous result shows us this vehicle can move much more distance with the new Battery Capacity.

Let us check how much it can move.

For this, we have changed the Number of Drive Cycle to 10.

That output is given below.

It is observed that the vehicle must move of 140.8 km to make the state of Charge to 0 and stop the vehicle.

3. Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file, Compare your results in a table and conclude.

Step1: After opening the ADVISOR tool, select the 'Load File' as 'PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in'

Keeping all other parameters as default Click on Continue.

Step2: Keeping the default values for Drive Cycle(CYC_UDDS) and number of cycles as 1

Click on the CheckBox for the Gradeability Test.

Click on the 'Grade Options'.

Step 3:Change the Speed values keeping all other values default.

Click OK and Click RUN on the next window.

Here Speed is 5mph

Result Analysis

We can observe the DriveCycle, State of Charge, Emissions, and overall ratio from the plots.

Also, the Gradeability and Speed in kmph are displayed in the Right window.

The last two steps are repeated for different Speed values and the Gradability is noted in each case.

The table below shows the Gradability values(%) for the speeds 55,45,35,25,15,5 in mph and also respective values in kmph.

We can conclude that the Highest Gradability is obtained when the speed is 15mph (24.1kmph).

It can also be observed that gradability is low at high speeds and low speed. Medium Speeds provide high gradability.
