CHALLENGE 3:

1. For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.

Ans:

For one duty cycle, the vehicle can travel upto 17.8 Km and the battery doesn’t discharge completely.

For two duty cycles, the vehicle can travel upto 35.5 Km and the battery doesn’t discharge completely. So, the vehicle properties are checked for 3 duty cycles.

For three duty cycles, we can observe that the vehicle goes upto 41.4 Km and the battery discharges completely.

From above analysis, we can observe that the vehicle can only move upto 41.1Km before battery gets completely discharged.

So, vehicle cannot travel upto 45Km for FTP duty cycle.

2. In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.

Ans.

When number of battery modules are changed from 25 to 26, battery voltage increased to 321V.

We observe that the distance covered is increased from 41.4km to 42.7 Km . Still 45Km mark is not reached. So, the number of battery modules has been increased to 27 in the next case.

When the number of modules are increased to 27, the battery voltage got increased to 333V. We observe that the distance increased to 44.8Km before discharging completely.

For 28 modules of battery, the battery capacity got increased to 345V and from graphs above, we observe that the distance travelled is 46.3Km before battery gets completely discharged.

3. Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file

Compare your results in table and conclude.

Ans.

Gradeability is checked for several speeds, the results are shown as below:

For 35 miles per hour, the gradeability was observed to be 2.4%

For 40mph the gradeability observed was 2.5%

For 45mph, the gradeabilty observed was 2.2%

Similarly, for several speeds gradeability was tabulated as below:

From the table, we can observe that the gradeability is high when the speed is 40mph and gradually decreases thereafter.

From this activity, we can conclude that the gradeability is high when the speed range is between 35mph and 45mph. When gradeabiliy is more, the hill climbing capacity will be more. So 35mph to 45mph is the desirable speed while travelling a rough road.
