Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool

Advanced Vehicle Simulator (ADVISOR)—the US Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) ADVISOR
written in the MATLAB/Simulink environment and developed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. ADVISOR provides the
vehicle engineering community with an easy-to-use, flexible, yet robust and supported analysis package for advanced vehicle modeling. It is
primarily used to quantify the fuel economy, the performance, and the emissions of vehicles that use alternative technologies including fuel
cells, batteries, electric motors, and internal combustion engines in hybrid (i.e. multiple power sources) configurations

1. For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.

SOLUTION:

Download and extract the ADVISOR GUI file and setup the MATLAB file path to this folder

Run the advisor.m file

ADVISOR tool is launched using matlab command promotor

Load file : EV_defaults_in

and change the Cargo Mass to 500 KG and continue to next page

Select Cycle FTP

as we have to check for 45km range, the one cycle of FTP is total 17.77 km distance. we have to repeat the cycle for 3 time

ADVISOR tool is runned

The ESS_SOC graph shows the battery state of charge, it can be seen in the graph the state of charge is getting zero before completing the 3rd cycle

at distance 41.4 KM the battery discharged

Result:

with Cargo weight 500Kg distance of 45Km cannot be covered in FTP cycle in single charge with EV_default_in model vehicle

2. In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.

Solution:

in EV_default_in file we will increase the battery pack(default 25 battery) to increase the range of the vehicle to cover the 45Km distance in FTP cycle with 500Kg cargo

3 battery are increased to default battery pack, total battery pack will be 28 battery,

increase in battery will result in:

1) increase in battery pack voltage

2) increase in energy storage

3) increase in weight of the vehical

again the model is runned for same FTP drive cycle for 3 time

the range got increased to 46.3 Km now

3. Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file Compare your results in table and conclude.

Solution:

PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file is loaded in advisor GUI

keeping all default value

check gradability test and go to grade option

At 10 m/h (16.1Km/h) the gradability is 30.3 %

simillarly gadability is calculated at different speed as per the below tabular

Result:

It is cear from the data collected, that with increase in the speed gradability of the vehical will decrease.
