Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool
AIM: using the ADVISOR tool analyse the following
- To determine whether the vehicle subjected to FTP driving cycle will be able to travel 45km if the cargo mass is increased to 500kg with other parameters remaining the same.
- Perform the same simulation with the change of battery capacity.
- To perform a gradeability test on the PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in and compare the results.
ANS 1:
Step 1: first let’s determine the range of the car for the default cargo mass of 136kg keeping rest all the parameters default.

Step2:
Selecting the drive cycle CYC_FTP file and run the simulation for 1 driving cycle.

Step 3:
when the vehicle is subjected to a single FTP drive cycle the distance covered and the state of charge of the battery can be observed as follows

Battery status:

After the test run for time t=2500s the battery charge is reduced to around 65%
Distance covered by the vehicle is 17.8km
After the test run for time t=2500s the battery charge is reduced to around 65%
Step 4 : lets perform the test for 3 consecutive drive cycles and see the distance covered the battery charge

After 7000s the of battery is fully discharged and the car provides a range of 48.2km.
Step 4: now let’s increase the cargo mass to 500kg and the vehicle being subjected to 4 drive cycles, the results are as follows

Distance covered 41.4km

After fully discharging the vehicle provide a range of 41.4km
RESULTS:
FOR A CARGO MASS OF 178KG THE VEHICLE PROVIDES A RANGE OF 48.2KM
FOR A CARGO MASS OF 500KG THE VEHICLE PROVIDES A RANGE OF 41.4KM
CONCLUSION : Thus the effect of change in cargo mass, drive cycle type and the no of drive cycles the car is subjected affects the battery performance and hence reduces the vehicle range.

ANS 2:
Let’s perform the same simulation for cargo mass of 500kg by changing the battery capacity and keeping all other parameters same.
Step 1:
We change the battery module no from 25 to 50 Nos

Step 2: run the test for 4 drive cycles and observe the results

Distance covered is increase significantly by 30km

The SOC of the battery is still at 15%
Step 3:
Let’s run the test for 6 drive cycles and observe the range provide by the vehicle after the battery gets fully discharged

From above results It can observed that the vehicle provides a max range of 78.2km for fully discharged battery.
RESULTS:
For increase in battery module number from 25 to 50 the range for the vehicle increased significantly by 35km approximately

ANS 3: To perform a gradeability test on the PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in and compare the results.
Step 1:
Selecting the load file PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in fom the drop down window keeping all the parameters default

Step2:
Select gradeability test in next window and run the test for same FTP cycle

Step 3:
Select various speeds for gradeability in the grade options

Step 4:
For various speed the gradeability is as follows

RESULTS: With increase in speed the gradeability of the vehicle decreases.
