Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool
AIM: To perform gradeability and speeed calculations by using ADVISOR tool.
ADVISOR : ADVISOR, NREL’s ADvanced VehIcle SimulatOR, is a set of model, data, and script text files for use with Matlab and Simulink. It is designed for rapid analysis of the performance and fuel economy of conventional, electric, and hybrid vehicles. ADVISOR also provides a backbone for the detailed simulation and analysis of user defined drivetrain components, a starting point of verified vehicle data and algorithms from which to take full advantage of the modeling flexibility of Simulink and analytic power of MATLAB.
You may benefit from using ADVISOR if you want to:
- estimate the fuel economy of vehicles that have not yet been built.
- learn about how conventional, hybrid, or electric vehicles use (and lose) energy throughout their drivetrains.
- compare relative tailpipe emissions produced on a number of cycles.
- evaluate an energy management strategy for your hybrid vehicle’s fuel converter.
- optimize the gear ratios in your transmission to minimize fuel use or maximize performance, etc.
The models in ADVISOR are:
- mostly empirical, relying on drivetrain component input/output relationships measured in the laboratory, and
- quasi-static, using data collected in steady state (for example, constant torque and speed) tests and correcting them for transient effects such as the rotational inertia of drivetrain components.
ADVISOR was preliminarily written and used in November 1994. Since then, it has been modified as necessary to help manage the US DOE Hybrid Vehicle Propulsion System subcontracts. Only in January 1998 was a concerted development effort undertaken to clean up and document ADVISOR.
Since then, over 4500 individuals have downloaded one or more versions of ADVISOR, including all of the OEMs and major suppliers. About 2/3rd of the users are from industry and 1/3rd from universities. A short list of major ADVISOR users includes:
- DaimlerChrysler.
- Ford Motor Company.
- General Motors Corp.
- Delphi Automotive Systems.
- Visteon.
OBJECTIVE:
1. For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.
For our convinience, we will observe the calculations of EV_defaults_in as an example. The General motor car arrangement and motor characteristics of GM EV1 car is shown as shown in figure.
Motor characteristics:

Here our question is to find the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP cycle, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions for EV_defaults_in file.
With changing the value off cargo mass as 500 kg with all other default conditions we apply the changes for the vehicle and click on the Continue button.

After the clicking the continue button, the FTP cycle is to be selected from the top right side and shows some graph between speed against time as shown in figure.
The FTP CYCLE shows the plot between speed(mph) and time(ssec) for one cycle.
The distance covered in one cycle is 11.04 miles. But here we have to find the distance for 45 km and observe the changes in the vehicle. Here we can see the time for cycle is 2477s and the maximum speed is 56.7 mph. The percentage obtained by FTP cycle is 40% at speed '0' and gradually decreasing and the speed is 5% at 60mph.

Now we are changing the number of cycles to 4 cycles to obtain the speed by using FTP cycle. With applying the changes the results are shown in figure.

Explanation:
- The 1st Plot shows the Drive Cycle Speed against Time.
- From the 2nd Plot, it can be Observed that Battery SOC has declined to 0 at time ca.
- Emission is absolute 0 since it is an Fully Electric Drive as shown in Plot 3.
- The Distance Travelled is some where around 25.7 Km as shown in Plot 4.

The number of plots obtained are 4. The fuel economy of the vehicle is '0' because it is a Electric vehicle and the distance covered in 4 cycles is 44.2 km .
The vehicle has failed to travel a distance of 45 km with a payload of 500 kg by using FTP CYCLE.
2. In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.
With increasing the battery capacity there is an increase in the weight of the vehicle as shown in figure.

Plot:

- The 1st Plot shows the Drive Cycle Speed against Time.
- From the 2nd Plot, it can be Observed that Battery SOC has declined to 0 at time ca. 7100s.
- Emission is absolute 0 since it is an Fully Electric Drive as shown in Plot 3.
- The Distance Travelled is some where around 49 Km as shown in Plot 4.
With an increase of battery module by 30 number ,the vehicle used to rech the reach the speed of 45.2 mph.
3. Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file.Compare your results in table and conclude.
To Perform the Gradeablity test for PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in Vehicle.

Engine Characteristics:

Vehicle Configuration:

Drive Cycle
- Gradeablity Test can be performed in 2 Methods
- Gradeablity at some defined Speed, Grade Test Option available for this.
- Gradeablity with constant Grade under any of the Drive Cycle.
- Change the Grade Parameters as required in Grade Options.
Case 1
@ 20 mph for 10 Seconds

Result:

The Gradeablity is 19.8 % with an Speed of 33.1 mph for suration of 10s.
Case 2
@ 30 mph for 10 Seconds

Result:

The Gradeablity is 14.7 % with an Speed of 33.1 mph for suration of 10s.
Case 3
@ 40 mph for 10 Seconds

Result:

The Gradeablity is 11.7 % with an Speed of 33.1 mph for suration of 10s.
Case 4
@ 50 mph for 10 Seconds

Result:

The Gradeablity is 9.7% with an Speed of 33.1 mph for suration of 10s.
Case 5
@ 60 mph for 10 Seconds

Result:

The Gradeablity is 8.1% with an Speed of 33.1 mph for suration of 10s.
Conclusion
- The Gradeablity decreses with Increase in the Speed.
