Challenge

Week 2 Railwheel and Track

Objective: In this challenge, we are going to perform the static structural analysis of Railwheel and Track.

We will perform this analysis for the following cases,

1) Bearing Load of 100000 N.

2) Bearing Load of 500000 N.

3) We will request the user-defined result for total deformation.

Geometry:

Imported geometry consists of 3 Parts.

1) Shaft.

2) Wheel.

3) Track.

Material: The Material used is Structural Steel which is available in the material library.

Mesh:

Tetrahedral Mesh is applied on the bodies with body sizing of 35 mm and face sizing of 35 mm

Node Count: 25189

Element Count: 13566

Contacts:

1)The Frictional Contact is defined between track and wheel with a coefficient of friction=0.3.

2) Frictionless Contact is defined between the shaft and wheel.

Joints:

1) Fixed Joint to the Track

2) Translational Joint to the shaft.

3) Planer joint to the wheel

Boundary Condition

1) Displacement:

The Displacement of 500 mm is given to the shaft with the translational joint as a reference in 5 steps.

2) Bearing Load:

The Bearing Load of 100000 N in case 1 and 500000 N in case 2 at the inner face of the wheel.

Analysis Settings:

The Analysis is done in 5 steps.

1st step:

2 to 5 Step:

Results:

CASE1: Bearing Load of 10000N

a) Total Deformation

b) Equivalent Stress:

c) Fatigue Life:

CASE 2: Bearing Load of 500000N

a) Total Deformation

b) Equivalent Stress:

c) Fatigue Life:

CASE 3: User-Defined Total Deformation.

We want to give user-defined results for total deformation.

to do this, we need to give an expression for calculating the user-defined result.

For total deformation, we need to take vector addition of deformation in three directions.

Total Deformation= `sqrt(Ux^2+Uy^2+Uz^2)`.

  • There is a 2nd way to find the user-defined total deformation is

Go to " Solution Branch and click on Worksheet, in worksheet find "USUM" and right click and " Create User Defined Result"

User-Defined Total Deformation is shown in fig. below.

Conclusion:

Total Deformation( in mm) Maximum Equivalent Stress(in MPa) Life (in Cycles) Used Defined Total Deformation( in mm)
100000N 1001.3 114.99 1E+6 1001.3 mm
500000N 1001.5 453.35 1E+6

1) The maximum Stress under 100000 N is 114.99 MPa.

2) The maximum Stress under 500000 N is 453.35 MPa.

3) The Total Deformation is 1001.3 mm and the user-defined total deformation is 1001.3, which are exactly matching.

4) From life calculation we can say that this component is safe from fatigue under the defined loading.
