Week 2 Railwheel and Track

ANALYSIS ON RAILWHEEL AND TRACKS

Objective :-

1. Undertake the statice structural simulation on RailWheel and Tracks

2. Compare the Total Deformation, Equivalent stress, and the life for the following cases

(a) Bearing Load is 100000N

(b) Bearing Load is 500000N

3. Implement a User-defined result and calculate the Total Deformation from this result and check if it is the same as that obtained by the inbuilt result by ANSYS for a load of 100000 N.

CAD

Procedure

Preprocessor

1. Static Structural module was selected in ansys work bench.

2. The CAD geometry was imported in the work bench and the material was assigned as structural Steel.

3. After the assigning of the material the contacts were defined as follows :-

(a) Friction was defined in between the wheel and rail.

(b) Frictinless was defined in between the shaft and wheel

4. Another step is to introduce the joint in the given simulation. the following are as follows :-

(a) Body to ground joint was defined on the rail and ground

(b) Translational joint was defined on the shaft connected to the wheel

(c) Planer Joint was defined between wheel and the ground.

5. The meshing was undertaken on the CAD model.

Solver

6. Analysis Settings were defined as follows

7. Solution for following parameters were selected for analysis

(a) Total deformation

(b) Equivalent Stress

(c) Equivalent Elastic Strain

(d) Directional Deformation

The expression for user define symmetry used was Sqrt((UX^2+UY^2+UZ^2))

Post Processor

CASE -1

Total Deformation Equivalent Stress Equivalent Strain Equivalent Stress 2 Equivalent Strain User Define Results Life
1001.3 105.71MPa 70629E-4 88.935Mpa 53964E-4 1001.3 3.08E5

CASE-2

Total Deformation Equivalent Stress Equivalent Strain Equivalent Stress 2 Equivalent Strain User Define Results Life
1001.5 537.37 36661E-3 537.37 36661E-3 1001.5 1196.2

CONCLUSIONS

1. Total deformation in both the cases are simillar. However it can be observed that there is an increase of 0.02% increase in total deformation in Case 2 where the load acting on the assembly was higher .

2. Equivalent Stress in Case 2 was higher than the Ultimate tensile Stress of Structural steel.

3. Equivalent Stress in Case 2 is maximum in Railwheel rather than the Track

4. Min Life of the Rail wheel got drastically reduced to 1196 cycles from 3.08E5 when the load was increased to 5E5N

5. User Define results are coming out to be simillar for both the cases.
