Week 2 : Basic Calibration of Single cylinder SI-Engine

Aim:Basic Calibration of Single cylinder SI Engine.

1.Run the case at 1800 rpm and list down important parameters (20 Marks)

  • air flow rate
  • BMEP
  • BSFC
  • In-cylinder pressure

2. Increase the power output at 3600 rpm by 10% (30 Marks)

Solution:

1) Case 1: 1800 rpm

I) Case Set up for 1800 rpm. II) Engine Performance :

III) Engine Mean Effective Pressures IV) Engine Performance Fuel Energy Basis:
V) In Cylinder Pressure Variation Graph: VI) In Cylinder Temperature Variation Graph:

List of Important Parameters from Engine Performance are as follows:

  1. Air Flow rate: 24.6 kg/h

  2. BMEP: 9.5 bar

  3. BSFC: 239.2 g/kW-h

  4. In-cylinder Pressure (IMEP) : 10.61 bar

2) Increase the power output at 3600 rpm by 10% (By input parameter variation)

Steps to increase power output by 10% at 3600 rpm are as follows:

a) The Case set up for two seperate cases at 3600 rpm but different cylinder geometry.

b) The detailed cylinder geometry is defined such that the engine is of square type.

c) The cases are solved and following results are obtained which indicate the 10% increase in power output with similar performance parameters.

i) The variation in BFSC in both cases.

ii) The Variation in BMEP:

iii) Incylinder Temperature variation for both cases.

iv) In cylinder pressure variation for both cases.

v) Engine performance predictions indicating around 11% increase in power output by changing the cylinder bore diameter from 86 mm to 89 mm.

d) Thus the desired increase in power output of engine is achieved by increasing the cylinder bore diameter.
