Week 10 Bullet penetrating a Bucket Challenge

Aim- To determine the transient structural analysis for the given Bullet penetrating a Bucket Challenge.

Objectives

  • Introduction simulates a bullet penetrating into a bucket.
  • To use 3 different nonlinear materials for the bucket and analyze their behaviour for the same velocity of the bullet.

Introduction

A bullet that expands has a bigger cross-sectional area, so it creates a bigger hole (or wound) in the target. Soft-point bullets work in a similar way, only using a soft lead tip instead of a hollow point, but expand more slowly and typically penetrate deeper.

The basic components of ammunition are the case, primer, powder, and projectile(s). Shotshells have an additional component called wad.

Kevlar. Perhaps one of the better-known bulletproof materials, Kevlar is a synthetic fibre that's heat resistant and incredibly strong. It's also lightweight, making it a popular choice for wearable bulletproof items. Kevlar is used in both military and civilian applications.

Procedure

To open the toolbar and apply the explicit dynamics as shown below.

Create the 3 non-linear materials of stainless steel NL, Copper alloy NL and Aluminium alloy NL.

Naming the component as the bucket and bullet as shown below. For bucket select the material as stainless steel NL.

For bullet select the material tungsten as shown below.

Create the body interaction and type frictionless as shown below.

Create edge sizing as the 6mm and create generate the mesh.

After meshing the component is seems to be as shown below.

Do the necessary things for the analysis settings as shown below.

Do the fixed support for the as shown in below.

Set the velocity for the bullet as per the bullet gets penetrate as shown on below.

After gets solved the forced convergence graph will be shown below.

The total deformation of the analysis max. at 1413.8mm as shown below.

The elastic strain for the component will be 0.024264mm as shown below.

The equivalent stress will be recorded as max. 3618.6MPa as shown below.

CASE 2

After gets solved the forced convergence graph will be shown below.

The total deformation of the analysis max. at 1442.9mm as shown below.

The elastic strain for the component will be 0.031801mm as shown below.

The equivalent stress will be recorded as max. 2830 MPa as shown below.

CASE 3

After gets solved the forced convergence graph will be shown below.

The total deformation of the analysis max. at 1433.9mm as shown below.

The elastic strain for the component will be 0.022754mm as shown below.

The equivalent stress will be recorded as max. 1596.1MPa as shown below.

Results

The results of the bullet penetrating bucket have been tabulated as shown in the table.

Total Deformation Elastic strain Equivalent stress
Case 1 1413.8mm 0.024264 mm 3618.6MPa
Case 2 1442.9mm 0.031801mm 2830 MPa
Case 3 1433.9mm 0.022754mm 1596.1MPa

Conclusion

The total deformation will be more in case 2 by using the materials for copper alloy NL of 1442.9mm as shown below.

The elastic strain will be more in case 2 compared to all other cases and is recorded as 0.031801 mm as shown below.

The equivalent stress will be more in case 1 of 3618MPa competing with all results. It's because the material used as stainless steel NL gets more stress.
