Week 10 Bullet penetrating a Bucket Challenge
OBJECTIVE: To perform explicit dynamics analysis of a bucket and bullet for 3 different nonlinear material and obtain the required result using ANSYS.
CASE 1: Bucket- Aluminium Alloy NL and Bullet- Tantalum
PROCEDURE:
- Open Ansys Workbench and choose Explicit Dynamics from the toolbox.
- In the Engineering data, choose the material Tantalum from the Explicit Materials and Aluminum Alloy NL from the General Non-linear material.

- For the geometry, right-click and import the given "bullet_bucket1.igs" and open with space claim.

- Split the bucket edge into equal halves from both sides in the SpaceClaim by Design -> Intersect -> Split -> choose the surface -> to split from "Select two cutter points"

- Now in the workbench goto Model -> Edit, in the model window check the Geometry for the material and assign Aluminium Alloy NL to the bucket and Tantalum to the bullet also select stiffness behaviour= Rigid for bullet component.

- In connections delete all the available connection, choose Body Interaction for geometry= All bodies and type= Frictionless.

- For mesh, select sizing and choose the 2 split edges of the bucket and element size= 5 mm, click on generate mesh.

- For analysis setting, Load Step Type= Explicit Time Integration, End time= 0.01, Max. Number of cycle= 1e+7, Maximum energy error= 5.

- Apply fixed support to the bucket by choosing the bottom face.

- Assign velocity from the initial condition to the bullet in the X component with -139000 mm/s.

- Assign velocity from the explicit dynamics to the bullet in the X component with -139000 mm/s.

- In the solution request select for the required output like Total deformation, Equivalent elastic strain and Equivalent Stress. Click on solve to generate the result.

CASE 2: Bucket- Stainless Steel NL and Bullet- Tantalum
- All of the above settings of Case 1 are kept similar except only for the bucket material assign Stainless Steel NL from the General nonlinear material.

CASE 3: Bucket- Structural Steel NL and Bullet- Tantalum
- All of the above settings of Case 1 are kept similar except only for the bucket material assign Structural Steel NL from the General nonlinear material.

RESULT:

CASE 1: Bucket- Aluminium Alloy NL and Bullet- Tantalum

CASE 2: Bucket- Stainless Steel NL and Bullet- Tantalum

CASE 3: Bucket- Structural Steel NL and Bullet- Tantalum

EQUIVALENT ELASTIC STRAIN

CASE 2: Bucket- Stainless Steel NL and Bullet- Tantalum

CASE 3: Bucket- Structural Steel NL and Bullet- Tantalum

EQUIVALENT STRESS
CASE 1: Bucket- Aluminium Alloy NL and Bullet- Tantalum

CASE 2: Bucket- Stainless Steel NL and Bullet- Tantalum

CASE 3: Bucket- Structural Steel NL and Bullet- Tantalum

| Total Deformation (mm) | Equivalent Elastic Strain (mm/mm) | Equivalent Stress (MPa) | |||||||
| Bucket Material | Min. | Max. | Average | Min. | Max. | Average | Min. | Max. | Average |
| Aluminium Alloy NL | 1.969e-027 | 1395.6 | 230.13 | 0 | 1.6044e-002 | 1.1097e-003 | 5.8945 | 699.44 | 61.341 |
| Stainless Steel NL | 1.969e-027 | 1390. | 238.71 | 0 | 1.7015e-002 | 6.5404e-004 | 7.0642 | 2573.9 | 87.021 |
| Structural Steel NL | 1.969e-027 | 1390. | 235.55 | 0 | 1.065e-002 | 6.0825e-004 | 8.197 | 1985.1 | 84.444 |
It can be observed from the analysis and the table that the bucket having material Aluminium Alloy NL have experienced the least amount of max Equivalent Stress which is of about 699.4 MPa but max Total Deformation experienced is 1395.6 mm which is the highest amount while Stainless Steel NL have experienced the highest amount of max Equivalent Stress which is of about 2573.9 MPa but max Total Deformation experienced is 1390 mm which is the lowest amount in comparison to Aluminium Alloy NL.
CONCLUSION:
So from the analysis, it can be inferred that the bullet made of Tantalum will penetrate the bucket for all the 3 material but it will easily penetrate the Aluminum Alloy NL in comparison to the Structural Steel NL and Stainless Steel NL.
