Week 10 Bullet penetrating a Bucket Challenge

Explicit Dynamics Analysis of Bullet penetrating a Bucket

Objective

To perform a Expicit Dynamics Simulation of bullet penetrating into a bucket for three non linear materials Cases, they are

Case 1: Aluminum alloy non-linear as Bucket material

Case 2: Copper alloy non-linear as Bucket material

Case 3: Stainless steel non-linear as Bucket material

Material data

Figure. 1 shows the Aluminium alloy non-linear's properties in Ansys Workbench engineering data. It was used in the Given Bucket model's as material input as per Case 1.

Figure. 2 shows the Copper alloy non-linear's properties in Ansys Workbench engineering data. It was used in the Given Bucket model's as material input as per Case 2.

Velocity & Fixed joint

Figure. 8 illustrates Fixed joint of the Bucket which is assigned to be the bottom face. Figure. 9 illustrates the velocity of Bullet body with a value of 139000 mm/s in the negative X-direction of the global coordinate system.

Comparison of Case 1, Case 2 and  Case 3

Parameters

Case 1

Case 2

 Case 3

Maximum Total Deformation

1390 mm

1390 mm

1482.3 mm

Maximum Equivalent Stress

501.37 MPa

1359 MPa

2608.6 MPa

Conclusion

  • Maximum deformation of Case 1 and Case 2 are same but Case 3 is higher than both two previous cases.
  • Maximum equivalent stress is higher in Case 3.
  • From these statements the Bucket material can be arranged as
    • Maximum Deformation, Stainless Steel NL > Aluminium Alloy NL, Copper alloy NL.
    • Maximum Stress, Stainless Steel NL > Copper alloy NL > Aluminium Alloy NL.
