EXPLANATION:

1. LITHIUM COBALT OXIDE (LiCoO2)

Its high specific energy makes Li-cobalt the popular choice for mobile phones, laptops and digital cameras. The battery consists of a cobalt oxide cathode and a graphite carbon anode. The cathode has a layered structure and during discharge, lithium ions move from the anode to the cathode. The flow reverses on charge.

At the anode, lithium is oxidised. Lithium ions are released from the carbon, along with electrons:

LiC6→xLi++xe−+C6

At the cathode, lithium-ions are absorbed by the lithium dioxide, and the electrode is reduced as it also receives the electrons from the circuit:

Li1−xCoO2+xLi++xe−→LiCoO2

The overall reaction is:

C6+LiCoO2⟷LixC6+Li1−xCoO2

2. LITHIUM IRON PHOSPHATE (LiFePO4)

At the anode, lithium is oxidised. Lithium ions are released from the carbon, along with electrons:

LiC6 → Li+ + e−+ C6

At the cathode, lithium ions are absorbed by the lithium dioxide, and the electrode is reduced as it also receives the electrons from the circuit:

Life (III)PO4 + xLi+ +xe−→LiFe(II)PO4

FePO4 + Li++e−→LiFePO4

The overall reaction is:

LiFePO4+6C→LiC6+FePO4

3. LITHIUM MANGANESE OXIDE (LiMn2O4)

This type of lithium battery uses a cathode made from lithium-manganese spinel (Li+Mn3+Mn4+O4). Spinel is a type of mineral with a distinctive AB2O4 structure.

Reaction at anode:

LiC6 →C6 + Li+ + e-

Reaction at cathode:

MnO2 + Li+ + e- ↔ LiMnO2

The overall reaction is:

C6 + LiMn2O4 ↔ LiC6 + Mn2O4

4. LITHIUM NICKEL MANGANESE COBALT OXIDE (LiNiMnCoO2 or NMC)

These batteries are generally made with a cathode with one-third nickel, one-third manganese and one-third cobalt, but the ratio can vary according to manufacturers’ secret formulas. These batteries are used in power tools, electric vehicles and medical devices.

Lithium manganese batteries are often coupled with a lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide battery, producing a combination that is used in many electric vehicles. High bursts of energy (for rapid acceleration) are provided by the lithium-manganese component, and a long driving range is provided by the lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide component.

Reaction at anode:

LiC6 →C6 + Li+ + e-

Reaction at cathode:

NiMnCoO2 + Li+ + e- ↔ LiNiMnCoO2

The overall reaction is:

C6 + LiNiMnCoO2 ↔ LiC6 + NiMnCoO2

5. Lithium Nickel Cobalt Aluminium Oxide (NCA)

Lithium Nickel-Cobalt-Aluminum Oxide (NCA) is used as the cathode material for lithium ion batteries, and is mainly used in electric automobiles. Due to a high nickel content of the Lithium Nickel-Cobalt-Aluminum Oxide (NCA) manufactured by the company, the capacity of batteries can be increased, which contributes to a longer distance that can be covered with a single-time charging.

Reaction at anode:

LiC6 →C6 +Li+ + e-

Reaction at cathode:

NiCoAlO2 + Li+ + e- ↔ LiNiCoAlO2

The overall reaction is:

C6+ LiNiCoAlO2 →LiC6 + NiCoAlO2

6.Lithium Titanate Oxide (LTO)

LTO is a rechargeable battery based on the, or modified from, the Lithium-Ion (li-ion) battery technology. Li-titanate oxide (LTO) replaces the graphite in the anode of the typical Li-Ion battery and forms the materials into a spinel 3D crystal structure. Having a nominal a cell voltage of 2.40V, it releases a high current discharge current that is 10 times the capacity of the other types of lithium batteries. Instead of using carbon particles on its surface as other lithium batteries do, Lithium Titanate utilizes lithium-titanate nanocrystals.

Reaction at anode:

Li4Ti5O12 ↔ Ti5O2 + 4Li+ + 4e-

Reaction at cathode:

4Mn2O4+4Li+ +4e- ↔ 4LiMn2O4

The overall reaction is:

4Mn2O4 + 4Li4Ti5O12 ↔ 4LiMn2O4 + Ti5O12

2.Compare the differences between each type of Li+ion batteries based on their characteristics

SOLUTION:

  • There are different types of lithium-ion batteries and the main difference between them lies in their cathode materials.
  • Different kinds of lithium-ion batteries offer different features, with trade-offs between specific power, specific energy, safety, lifespan, cost, and performance.

The six lithium-ion battery types that we will be comparing are;

Lithium Cobalt Oxide, Lithium Manganese Oxide, Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide, Lithium Iron Phosphate, Lithium Nickel Cobalt Aluminum Oxide, and Lithium Titanate.

Table Explanation:

  1. Lithium Cobalt Oxidehas high specific energy as compared to the other batteries which make it the preferred choice for laptops and mobile phones.
  • It also has a low cost and a moderate performance.
  • However, it is highly unfavourable in all the other aspects when compared to the other lithium-ion batteries. It has low specific power, low safety, and a low lifespan.

  1. Lithium Manganese Oxidehas moderate specific power, moderate specific energy, and a moderate level of safety when compared to the other types of lithium-ion batteries.
  • It has the added advantage of a low cost.
  • The downsides are its low performance and low lifespan. It is usually used in medical devices and power tools.
  1. Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxidehas two major advantages as compared to the other batteries.

The first one is its high specific energy which makes it desirable in electric powertrains, electric vehicles, and electric bikes.The other is its low cost. It is moderate in terms of specific power, safety, lifespan, and performance when compared to the other lithium-ion batteries.It can be optimized to either have high specific power or high specific energy.

  1. Lithium Iron Phosphateonly has one major disadvantage when compared to other types of lithium-ion batteries and that is its low specific energy.
  • Other than that, it has moderate to high ratings in all the other characteristics.
  • It has high specific power, offers a high level of safety, has a high lifespan, and comes at a low cost.
  • The performance of this battery is also moderate.
  • It is often employed in electric motorcycles and other applications that require a long lifespan and a high level of safety.
  1. Lithium Nickel Cobalt Aluminium Oxideoffers one strong advantage as compared to the five other batteries and that is high specific energy.
  • It is pretty moderate in the rest of the characteristics like performance, cost, specific power, and lifespan.
  • The only downside to this battery type is its low level of safety.
  • Its high specific energy and moderate lifespan make it a good candidate for electric powertrains.

  1. Lithium Titanate offers high safety, high performance, and a high lifespan which are very important features every battery should have.
  • Its specific energy is low compared to the five other lithium-ion batteries but it compensates for this with moderate specific power.
  • The only major disadvantage of lithium titanate as compared to the other lithium-ion batteries is its extremely high cost.
  • Another important feature of this battery worthy of mention is its remarkably fast recharge time.
  • It can be used for storing solar energy and creating smart grids.
