Week 1 : Exploring the GUI of GT-POWER
1. Explore the GUI of GT SUITE and list down modules available with brief description.
GT Suite is the CAE simulation tool which is packed with simulation librarlies and tool-kits aimed at a wide range of applications and industries. The scope of the engineering analysis includes prototype designing, detailed system and component analysis, design optimization and root cause investigation.
The exhaustive modules available in GT-Suite are as follows:
- COOL 3D
This module is a CAD-based pre-processing tool with GT-COOL to simulate 3D modules integrated with 1D cooling circuits. It is used to comprehend the airflow around/ through stacked heat exchangers, fans and engine blocks.
- GEM 3D
This feature is used to build complete exhaust or intake systems including systems including multiple mufflers, pipes and airboxes.
- GT-ISE (Intergrated)
It is the main interface where models are built and simulations are launched. It is an environment where all the elements are brought into the map and connected together linking the entire model.
- GT-Post
It is used to view and manipulate the results obtained from the simualtion. GT-Post is used to generate the 2D and 3D plots, combining the different test cases in the single plots and data.
- VT-Design
VT Design feature is used to design valvetrain and cam. It can also be used to create cam design /profiles dimensions, valvetrain mechanism can be run and viewed directly from the VT design interface.
- GT Spaceclaim
GT-Spaceclaim uses built-in translation tools to import common CAD format into GT-Suite. Simplifying geometry to prepare a model for simulation and extracting the inner/fluid core of the solid models are some of the applications.
2. Locate following settings:
- Time Control Flag

- Time step and solution control

- Integrator/Solver type

3. Explore intercooler tutorial and note down all settings of:
- Run Setup
For the above case, various attributes can be chosen for setting the time-step, initial values, solvers for physical quantitites. The main subtrees for controling these attributes are listed as follows:
- Time Control

- Initialization

- Flow Control

- ODE Control

- Signal Control

- Thermal Control

- Convergence RLT

- Advanced Setup
Advanced Setup has similar subtree structure as the run setup. The main subtrees of the Advanced Setup are as follows:
- General

- Flow

- Mechanics

- Restart

- Version Changes

- Paths

- Misc Files

- Plot Setup
The plots of individual component can be stored by selecting the appropriate plot from the "Plot Options" folder within each part. This will result into request of the plot being listed in the plot setup. Various options can be used to change the final presentation of the plot or can be listed as default values.

- Output Setup
Similar to advanced setup and run setup, has a tree data structure. This stores information about the following subtrees which stores the settings of the attributes.
- Data Storage

- General

- GT_Post_Setup

- Flow

- ODE-Mech

- ScoreboardRLTs

- UserboardRLTs

- EndofRunTables

4. Inter Cooler Problem:
For the inter cooler problem we use the tutorial file availble in GT-Suite. After opening the problem in the GT-ISE, the 1D model of the cooler with necessary connections can be visualized in the following figure

The inlet and outlet of diameter of the cooler is set to 50 mm and its length is fixed at 1000 mm and the material of the pipe is chosen as steel.

The mass flow rate at the inlet is set to 1200 kg/h and the temperature of the air as 100 degrees celsius.

The outlet pressure is set to 2 bar and its temperature is set to 30 degrees celsius.

Results:
From the figure below we can conclude that pressure drop between the two boundaries of the CAC is 1.12 e-5 bar and the average convective heat transfer rate to the walls at CAC is 7.55 kW.
