Usage of Navigation tool , Timeliner and Clash Detection test using Naviswork
Question 01) Use the Architecture/ Structure Project file developed by you in Week 6 to 8. Export the Revit architecture and structure model to Navisworks Cache file following the export settings discussed in class
Answer:
Aim: Exporting Revit Architecture and structure model of week 6 to 8 to Navisworks Cache file.
Introduction: Navis-work is a 3D design review package for Microsoft windows. It is used primarily in construction industries to complement 3D design packages such as
Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD etc., Navis-work allows users to open and combine 3D models; navigate around them in real-time and review the model using a set of
tools including comments, redlining, viewpoint and measurements. A selection of plug-ins enhances the package adding interference detection, 4D time
simulation, photorealistic rendering and PDF-like publishing.
Navis-work has a number of built-in functionalities:
- Roamer- The core part allows users to open models from a range of 3D design and laser scan formats and combine them into a single3D model. Users can navigate around the model in real-time and review the model with a range of mark-up tools.
- Publisher: This allows users to publish the complete 3D model into a single NWD file that can be freely opened by anyone using Freedom, a free viewer.
- Clash Detective: A functionality to enable interference detection. This means users can select parts of the model and look for places where the geometry.
conflicts. This is for finding faults in the design.
- Renderer: With the Renderer, users can apply materials and lighting to the model and produce photo realistic images and animations.
- Quantification: By "taking off" the model, users can automatically make material estimates, measure areas and count building components.
- Time-liner: Adds 4D simulation so the user can link geometry to times and dates and to simulate the construction or demolition of the model over time
and also links with project scheduling software to import task data.
- Animator: A feature that allows the users to animate the model and interact with it.
- Scripter: This allows the user to setup a collection of actions that he/she want to happen when certain events conditions are met.
Procedure:
- Open the Revit software in architecture format and open the project created in week 6.
- Now go to the ‘File’ click on Export and again click on ‘NWC’ (Available only after the software installation of ‘Navisworks’).
- A new window will appear on the screen. First change the Navisworks settings to
- a) Convert Element Parameter-All
- b) Coordinates shared
- c) Export -Entire project
- Then change the file name make sure u r saving the file in (.nwc) format.
- Finally Click ‘ok’ and choose a location path and save the file.
- Now open the Navisworks, go to file and open .nwc file in Navisworks.
- Follow the same procedure to export structural drawing to Navis-works.

Question 02) Use Navigate Tool to walk around the model and walk through the rooms created and record your moving as animation in your Navisworks file.
Answer:
Aim: To use Navigate tool to walk around and through the model created and recording the same as animation in Navisworks.
Procedure:
- Open the Navisworks software and open the architectural model exported.
- Now go to the ‘view point’ in the tool bar, and click on ‘walk’ icon
- Now start using all the view icons like ‘zoom window, orbit and look around to get interior views.

Question 03) Use Navigate tool to use Realism feature to walk through the model and record your moving as animation in Navisworks file.
Answer:
Aim: To use Navigate tool to check Realism feature to walk through the model and record your moving as animation.
Procedure:
- Open the file that is exported to Navisworks.
- Now go to the ‘View port’ tool bar and click on ‘Realism’ and check the box ‘Third Person’.
- A man will appear on the screen. Noa adjust the project as if the man is standing in front of the school with the help of Pan and Orbit icon from ‘view port’.
- Now click on the ‘Walk’ icon and press long on the left button of the mouse to move the man to every corner of the building. While the man is moving go to the ‘Animation’ toolbar and click on ‘Record’. Now u can also record the movement of the man throughout the building.

Question 04) Embed both architecture and structure *.nwc file to your Navisworks file. Create a clash detection test between the two models
a. Run the Clash Detection Test
b. Study the clashes between the two models
c. List which of the clashes could be approved
d. List which of the clashes could be neglected (will be taken care later)
e. List which of the clashes can be resolved
f. Save the results after colour coding the clashes to the Navisworks file
g. In case of resolution annotate the clash and save the view to defined views in Navisworks.
Answer:
Aim: Running Clash Detection test between the Architectural model and Structural Model created in week 7/8 and analysing the kind of clashes detected.
Procedure:
1) Open Architectural file in Navis works. Now go to home tab, and click ‘append’ and load the Structural model created in week 7 or 8 to the Architectural model.
2) Now go to ‘home’ tab and click on ‘Clash detection’. A new window will appear. In this click on ‘add test’ then rename the first test as ‘Archi Basement vs struct Basement’.
3) Now, select the Basement of Structural model exported in ‘Section A’ and Basement of the Architectural model exported in ‘Section B’. Now Click on ‘Run Test’.
A Clash Detection Test will run and the results will appear as shown. From the results
a) List the clashes which are active.
b) List which of the clashes could be approved.
c) List which of the clashes could be ignored (will be taken care later)
d) List which of the clashes could be resolved.
e) Finally save the results after colour coding to the Navis works file.

Question 05) Using the Time-liner feature in Navisworks prepare a schedule for the project developed in week 6 to 8 by adding reasonable assumptions for task start date and end date and simulate the task completion as a visual simulation. Record it and save the timeline simulation to Navisworks file.
Answer:
Aim: To prepare a schedule for the project developed in week 6 to 8 by adding reasonable assumptions for task start date and end date and simulate the task completion as a visual simulation using Time-liner.
Procedure:
- Open a Structural model created in week 6 or 7 in Navis works. Then go to ‘home’ tab and click on ‘Time-liner’.
- A new window will appear on the screen. Now click ‘Add Task’ option available to add new Tasks.
- Enter the planned construction activities to be done at site with planned and actual dates and provide type as ‘Construct’.
- Click on Simulate Record it and save it to work. Hence Time-liner Simulation is completed.
