Creating Walls, Partition walls and Floors for a residential layout using REVIT
Question 1) Use the project file created from Week 2. Use it for this assignment. Based on your layout from week 2, using floor tool under architecture tab and select the floor with appropriate material and thickness using the property browser create a layout in the Ground floor Level. Align the floor plan with grids created from week 2.
Answer:
Aim: Creating the floor for the model created in the week 2 session using the floor tab with proper material and thickness. Align the floor plan with grids.
Procedure:
- Open the layout that was created in the last week session.
- Now as the layout is ready, go to the ‘Architecture tab’ and now click on the ‘floor’ and then click on ‘floor Architectural’ icon.
- Now a new tab with name ‘create floor boundary’ will appear on the right side of the toolbar.
- There we have to click on the ‘boundary walls’ and create a closed boundary wall around the outer walls of the layout.
- Once the closed boundary lines are created click on the end mode. Now the floor will be created.
- Once the floor is created, assign proper material and thickness to the that floor.
- Go to the ‘properties toolbar’ then assign the proper thickness of the floor.
- For residential building 4” floor is sufficient. To create 4” floor, first select type of the floor, here Generic 12” floor selected.
- In that 12” Generic floor go to the ‘edit type’. There, click on the ‘duplicate’ icon. Then a small window will appear.
- There we have to edit the thickness of slab to 4” and rename it accordingly. Then go to the ‘edit’ icon and there change the thickness of the floor to 4”.
- Then assign your floor to this thickness and material.
- Now for the balcony floor repeat the same procedure and create wooden floor of 4” thickness.
- Now go to 'view' toolbar and the click on '3D views' and go to 'Default 3D view'. Here the floor created can clearly be seen.
- Now for this Layout add grid lines. For adding Grid lines go to ‘Architeture’ toolbar. Then go to ‘grids’ icon. (On the right side of the tool bar)
- Now start assigning the longitudinal and transverse grid lines. Name the longitudinal grids in numbers and transverse grids in alphabets.

Question 2) Add walls based on the floor layout. Pick lines or use the draw tool to modify the boundary of walls. Use the property browser to select appropriate material and thickness for walls. After creating the walls verify using the property browser to see if the top and bottom of the walls are constrained.
a) Based on your observation, what is beneficial for connecting walls with associated levels rather than being Unconnected.
b) Which option is convenient for modelling walls, By Height or By Depth?
Answer:
Aim: Adding walls to the floor layout and assigning proper material and thickness of the walls. Verifying the top and bottom of the walls to be constrained or not.
Procedure:
- Once the Layout floor layout is created, now got to 'Architecture tab'. Then click on 'Walls', and on 'walls architectural'. Then on this tab click on 'Pick lines' then draw the interior walls.
- Go to the ‘Architectural tab’ then click on ‘walls’ icon and then on ‘Architectural walls.'
- Now from the ‘Properties tool bar’ select for the interior 4 7/8” thickness partition (1 hr) wall.
- Then in the ‘property browser’ click on the edit type. Then a new window will appear.
- Then click on ‘duplicate’ to create a 4 ½” interior wall and rename it. Then in the ‘value’ column on the ‘structure’ row click on ‘edit’ and change the thickness to 4 1/2”.
- Nor draw all the interior walls selecting 4 ½” thickness.
- No go to 'View toolbar'. Then on '3D views' then to the 'default 3D view'. Now we can see the 3d view of all walls created.
- Now once the walls are created, select one wall. Then in the 'Property browser' check for the 'base constraint'.
- Base constraint should always be at 'Level 1 (0'0")' and the top constraint be at roof or at the level 2.
- It is always beneficial to have walls connected. If the walls are 'connected', the drawing the multiple floors will be easier. So, it is always beneficial to connect the walls. The most convenient way of modelling the walls is by 'height'.

Question 3) Copy the model elements (wall, floor) modelled to Ground Floor Level and paste it aligned to First Floor Level. Use modify tab to utilize copy and paste options to align elements to a different level.
Answer:
Aim: copying the elements which are assigned to ground floor (wall, floor) and pasting it to first floor level using 'modify tab'.
Procedure:
- When the model is open in Revit, go to ‘level 1’ renamed as ‘ground floor level’. Then select all the model layout from the ground floor level.
- After selecting all the elements (walls, doors and floors), now go to the “modify tab’ there select ‘copy to clipboard’.
- Now in the ‘project browser’ go to the ‘level 2’ renamed as second floor level and now paste it with option ‘aligned to selected levels.’
- NO go to the ‘view toolbar’ then click on ‘3D views’ and click on ‘default 3Dview’.
- Now the ground floor layout will be pasted on first floor.

Question 4) Use interior partition walls to create separate rooms within your residential unit. The model must include the following rooms
a. Living Room/ Drawing Room (15’ X 18’)
b. Dining Room (9’ X 11’)
c. Bed Room (9’ X 12’ and 15’ X 11’)
d. Rest Room (10’ X 12’)
e. Kitchen (8’ X 10’).
The above are for examples. You can use them or use your measured entities to create your model based on your layout. You may include entry walkway, Patios or Guest rooms based on your creativity and purpose of modelling. Convert units if you are using metric system
Answer:
Aim: To create separate rooms in the Ground floor layout and then adding doors and tagging rooms with proper names.
Procedure:
- Go to ‘Architecture menu’. Select ‘walls’ and then click on ‘Architectural walls.’
- Then from the ‘property browser’ select ‘partition-4 7/8” interior walls’ then go to ‘edit type’ then edit the thickness of the interior walls as 4.5.”
- Then draw interior walls in the Ground floor Layout.
- Now the divide the layout with Living room, Dining room, Bed room, Rest room and Kitchen with proper dimensions.
- Now add doors to the rooms. For adding doors select ‘Architectural menu’, then click on doors and select the size and type of the door from ‘properties browser’.
- Then select on the walls where doors have to be added. This will automatically place the doors.
- Once rooms are created now tag the rooms with appropriate names.
- For tagging the rooms go to ‘Architectural menu’ then go to ‘room’ and tag the rooms.
- Now model is ready with all the rooms.
