Underbody Coating

  1. Write one page about Under body coating and its purposes

It is the protective coating given to the car’s underbody to protect it from corrosion and from being damaged.

It is a rust – preventable coating outside of the vehicle.

There are types of under body coating based on the type of damage and the type of protection the vehicle needs.

PROCESS

Before underbody coating the BIW frame is treated with the electrolyte coating for internal corrosion resistance and sent through the chemical treatment for removing the over coating in the small holes and after this stage it is sent for underbody coating depending upon its requirements. Then inspection and painting is started.

TYPES

  1. Rubberized Coating – Used for protection from dust, moisture and dings and it is safe to apply on the wheel wells and panels. It has a thickness of 2-3mm.
  2. Polyurethane Coating - This type of sealant works by seeping into all cracks and seams, displacing salt and moisture and oozing around rusty areas to bond with and protect oxidized metal. It is quick and easy to apply.
  3. Paraffin Based Coating - A paraffin-based undercoating will be the cheapest and quickest option available with which to protect the undercarriage of your vehicle.
  4. Asphalt based Coating – Used for heavy trucks and vans for protection from rocks, chips and moisture and gives a greater durability.

ADVATAGES

  • To protect the car body externally from corrosion and damage, especially for vehicles in coastal regions it is required, as it may get corroded easily due to salt water.
  • It also protects parts like internal body panels, frame rails and other inner cavities that are not physically accessible but are prone to corrosion.
  • It provides the long-term protection. Thicker under body acts as sound dampers, helps in reducing noise.
  • Easy maintenance.

DISADVANTAGES

  • Cost is more.
  • Third party underbody coating might void vehicles warranty
  • It adds additional weight to the vehicle.
  • Must be re-applied every 3-5 years.
