Underbody Coating

AIM: Write a one page report about Underbody coating and its purpose, Its type and its pros and cons.

Car Under-Body

Underbody part are mainly structure elements and panel placed in the lower part of the vehicle including the whole vehicle's platform.

Under-Body Coating

Underbody coatings are those which are used to prevent car bodies against rust & corrosion. This underbody coating helps in protection from dust and moisture also some other factors such as poor road conditions, rocks getting thrown from tires and denting the metal and salt from water during monsoon which plays an important role in damaging the underbelly of a car.

Purppose of Applying Underbody Coating

Some of the factors that make Underbody Anti-Rust Coating essential before stepping into the mansoon season:

  • Protect against Rust and Corrosion:- The primary objective of getting underbody coating done is preventing metal components that are exposed on the bottom side of the car to damage from corrosion. You can shut out the Adverse effects of corrosion on your car by simply applying a rubberised anti-rust coating all over the belly of your car.
  • Reduce NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) levels:- Our country is filled with roads having uneven patches and potholes and while we manoeuvre our cars through such sections, the unpaved crumbs, and pebbles hit the car from underneath or get stuck in the wheel wells. The underbody coating’s consistency is so thick that the layer it creates absorbs all the unpleasant noises and vibrations and marginally improves the driving experience.
  • Prevent Paint, Chipping, Scretches:- Running on the highway or while pacing through a city road, you will often encounter sharp gravel or any other unattended object hitting the belly of your car with high momentum. This scrapes and chips off the metal from down below. A thick layer of Underbody Coating definitely comes to aid and minimises the effects of such contacts on the body.
  • Protect vital components- Work as Reinforcement:- Underneath a car is somewhere a lot of indispensable parts of a car are left exposed like the Engine, silencer, etc. One simply can’t afford to let these parts go bad due to rusting and hence in order to save yourself from a hefty repair bill, a considerably less expensive Anti-Rust Coating is a must.
  • Protecting its most exposed areas from moisture, dirt, salt and more.
  • Working as Heat Insulation
  • Making your car smooth
  • It extend the lifespan of your car

Types of Under-Body Coating

There are various kinds of underbody coating likes:

  • Rubberized Underbody Coating
  • Wax based Underbody Coating
  • Asphalt Based Underbody Coating
  • Polyurethene Underbody Coating

Rubberized Underbody Coating: This is widely considered to be the best underbody coating for your car. It protects the underbody from scratches and keeps it properly. It’s also not difficult to apply this to the undercarriage. This can be done at the authorized service center or by the local repair shop at a reasonable price. Rubberized coating is ideal if you want to keep the road noise to a minimum and rust and corrosion away. This extra protection is a low-cost measure that can pay off by potentially extending the service life of a vehicle.

Wax based underbody coating: A bitumen-free wax coating that gives excellent corrosion protection compared to all other types of underbody coating. This wax coating is also an excellent corrosion preventive for long lasting protection of unpacked metal sheets. By using special and high-quality components and additives, the product meets even the highest industry standards. Wax under body protection provides perfect protection against mechanical abrasion and corrosion on endangered body parts, such as interior mudguards, etc., with even a thin layer. The wax is waterproof but it's more costly.

Asphalt Based Underbody Coating: This undercoating does provide some benefits over Waxed Based Undercoating. They both stick well to most any surfaces and do a great job sealing out moisture, road chemicals and oxygen. But mainly, Asphalt undercoating has the benefit of being less expensive. They protect anywhere up to 5 years and dry to a Firm to Hard coating.

Asphalt Based Undercoating does require a thicker film thickness meaning you will have to apply more product to the surface to be protected then if you use a Wax Based Undercoating. Additionally, Asphalt based products require more surface preparation because they can actually seal in rust and moisture allowing it to continue to grow. Finally, Asphalt based products continue to dry out over time causing cracks in the coating surface.

Polyurethene Underbody Coating: This covering seals breaks and fractures in the vehicle’s underbody. It provides strong corrosion resistance and also binds to the metal. Unlike an asphalt-based coating, the polyurethane coating may be painted over.

PROS of underbody coating:

  • Fights Rust: It has a crucial function in preventing corrosion. Underbody coating is particularly useful if you live near the sea, where there is excessive humidity and rust is a common occurrence. If you live somewhere where it snows in the winter, you should seriously consider undercoating. During the monsoon season, cars are at high risk of getting corrosion. If you want to extend your car’s life you should get an underbody coating.
  • Absorbs Noise: Very strong undercoating, realize it or not, can attenuate noises that enter the cabin. The undercoating, which is frequently made of rubber, absorbs part of the rackets. The car’s occupants could avoid the road sounds - at least to some extent. So if you want a quite ride and pleasant experience it is always a good idea to consider getting an underbody coating.
  • Reinforcement: If your automobile already has an underbody covering, applying another one on top of it will not harm it. It will provide further protection for the underbody from water, road debris, gravel, and tiny stones. The factory coat would also have a lower risk of flaking away.
  • Prolong car's life: A good undercoat protects not just the underbody from corrosion, but also the engine and gearbox. Less corrosion combined with slower wear and tear can extend the life of your car by many years. On the undercarriage, there would be fewer dents, dings, and scratches to worry about.
  • You can do your own vehicle undercoating which is a cheapest way also.

CONS of underbody coating:

  • It's not effective on cars with corrosion
  • Does't work so well on old cars
  • It's useless on new car which you can change the car every 1to 2 years.
  • Your vehicles warranty might be voided means if you opt for a third party undercoating treatment like new cars comes already with underbody coating.
  • It makes your vehicles heavier
  • It can be expensive.
