Underbody Coating

Underbody coating is a coating which is coated at the under body of the car that provides long term protection from corrosion, stones, chips to car's underbody. It also protects parts like internal body panels, frame rails and other inner cavities that are not physically accessible but are prone to corrosion. It is a thick, rubberized paint that forms a 2-3 mm thick coating all along the underside of the car when sprayed on.

Pros:

  • Its helps in Dampens the sound and vibrations from the underbody of the car creating due the stones and chips hitting the underframe. The stones chips, pebbels can chip off the original underbody coating and leave the metal exposed.
  • It is also used to hide the welds, repairs and body works on underframe.
  • It protects from the heat and cold during the seasons on underframe which are environmental conditions.
  • It is mostly important for the cars in costal areas due the salt moisture in the atmosphere.
  • The thicker coatings can reduce road noise and tyre noise and make the cabin quieter due to the sound absorptive nature of rubberized paints.

Cons:

This thick rubberized paint if not applied properly, can get into moving mechanical parts such as the U-joint or CV joints in a cars propeller shaft or drive shafts and cause premature failure.

Types of Underbody Coating:

1.Rubberized Coating:

Rubberized undercoating is safe to use on wheel wells and quarter panels, and dries to a soft rubbery finish that prevents further rust, damage, or moisture seeps.

It provides the simplest and best protective measures against rust and moisture.

2.Polyurethene Undercoating:

Polyurethene Undercoating works by seeping into all cracks and seams, displacing salt and moisture and oozing around rusty areas to bond with and protect unoxidized metal.

Polyurethene undercoating is a little bit quicker and easier to apply.

3.Wax or Paraffin based Undercoating:

It will wear off quicker than other types of undercoating and will need to be stripped and reapplied at least once every year as it is cheaper and quicker option available.

4.Asphalt based Undercoating:

Asphalt-based undercoating provides a bit of extra durability against rocks, chips, and moisture for large trucks and heavy machinery.

This type of undercoating generally requires more cure time than the other types.

For standard vehicles like cars, the above three types of undercoating is sufficient for protection.
