Underbody Coating

UNDERBODY COATINGS

Introduction:

Sheet metal is the one of the most common materials in automobile industry. Although sheet metal has many benificial properties oo its own, it is in most cases recommended to aplly a underbody coating to give the surface protective layer with the specific added properties and the underbody coating is protected even more and increases the BIW's lifetime. A underbody coating can change the substate's property or appearance as well as protecting the substrate from wearing out. Here we discussing about the purpose, process and types of underbody coatings.

Why Underbody Coating is required?

This is usually due to things like weather and other environmental factors, In India mostly weather is one of the main reasons to rust and corrosion on vehicles.

Processes of Underbody Coating:

  • Pre-Treatment is the common to remove foreign contaminations, welding spatters and spots. It's consists of four stages, they are hot water, degreaser, surface preparation and phosphate cleaner.
  • Electro-Deposition is the coat protects overall body and frames from corrosion. This is to be applied before the prime coat.
  • Sealent is to prevents the seams and spot welds contaminations.
  • Primer is the coat is acts as a anode and protects the materials from corrosion.
  • Topcaot has two stages, one is base coat and another one is clear coat. The base coat is primary coloring pigment and the clear coat prevent from UV degradation and weather.

Types of Underbody Coatings:

1. Rubberized underbody coating -Is easy to apply and protect from moisture, dust and dents. The coating can be painted over and,if necessary any BIW repair work, can be easily removed with undercoating remover.

Wax based Underbody coating- is the cheap and simple application method. This is more compact to protects the humid climate. This is usually available in spray cans or aerosal spray cans.

Polyurethane- Polyurethane is easiest application method and protects from uv and rainy season, But this type of coating need more surface preparation and primer etching before using it.

Asphalt based - It contains little bit of rubberized materials to protect from noise, and this type of under coating need more curing time than other three methods. It is prtoect more and extra durable against rocks,Chip stones and moisture.
