Section Modulus Calculation and Optimization

Aim:

To calculate the Section modulus of Hood design using I have designed hood and modify the new section and improve the Section Modulus.

Section Modulus:

The Bending Equation,

Instead of dealing two quantities I and y, we can use a single property in I/y. This ratio is a measure of property of section to resist bending is known as 'Section Modulus' or Modulus of Section.

Here Section Modulus denoted by " S "

Definition:

The ratio of moment of inertia abouth the neutral layer to the distance of the extreme layer from the neutral axix.

Section Modulus, S = I/y

Here,

S = Section Modulus

I = Moment of Inertia

y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object.

The surface in which there no longitudinal stresses acting is called neutral plane or layer. In such planes there is neither compression nor expnsion takes plase due to transverse load. A trace of neutral plane on any transverse plane of the beam is called the neutran axix.

Section Modulus Calculation:

Here I'm going to calculate the Section Modulus of Hood design i have designed.

Section #1

Moment of Inertia - Section# 1

Neutral Axix

Section Modulus Calculation

Section #1

Moment of inertia ( I ) min. = 1.654510471e+04 (mm^4)

Neutral Axix (y) = 871.4/2 = 435.7 mm

Section Modulus (S) = I/y = 1.654510471e+04 (mm^4) / 435.7 mm = 37.9736 mm^3

Section #2

Here I increased the Emboss height 0.5 mm, Lets see the section modulus of modified section.

Moment of Inertia -Section #2

Section Modulus of Section#2

Moment of inertia ( I ) min. = 2.414634306e+04 (mm^4)

Neutral Axix (y) = 435.7 mm

Section Modulus (S) = I/y = 2.414634306e+04 (mm^4) / 435.7 mm =55.4196 mm^3

% of Section modulus diference between the Section#1 & Section#2

Conclusion:

S1 = 37.9736 mm^3

S2 = 55.4196 mm^3

From the above comparison, the emboss modified area (section#2) has 37.36% higher Section of Modulus than the section#1. Section of modulus is directly propotional to the moment of inertia as well as Bending strength. So increase the moment of inertia, the section modulus as well as the bending strength will be increased. That means the Section #2 Section Modulus is 37.36% higher than the Section #1 and also the section #2 bending strength is higher than the Section#1.
