Underbody Coating

UNDERBODY COATING

Underbody coating or undercoating is a thick resilient coating applied to the underbody or chassis of an automobile to protect against impact damage from small stones, which would rapidly chip ordinary paint, allowing rust to begin.

The followings are the types of underbody coating:-

  1. Rubber-Based Underbody Coating:-
Rubber-based underbody coating is generally known as the best underbody coating for cars. It preserves the underbody well from water, sand, and debris, protecting it from scratches and rusting of the underbody of cars.

  2. Wax-Based Underbody Coating:-
Wax-based underbody coating is less lasting undercoating and it will wear away in a few months. But wax-based undercoating puts up a big fight against moisture. Even a thin layer of it creates a closed water-protecting film. It is also the most affordable option out there and best suited for areas where vehicle faces mainly rain or wet rod condition.

  3. Asphalt-Based Automotive Undercoating:-
Best suited for lorries, trucks, and large vehicles this provides a greater degree of protection from moisture, road chemicals, and oxygen as compared to rubber-based coatings or wax-based coatings. The process of applying this coating is a bit time-consuming because a lot of surface preparation is required before applying it.

  4. Polyurethane Underbody Coating:-
Polyurethane underbody coating closes up splits and fractures on the underbody of the vehicle. It offers up good protection against corrosion and also bonds with the metal. Painting over the polyurethane coating is possible if needed.

Pros of Underbody Coating:-

  • Underbody coating gives you an extra layer of protection against rust and corrosion, protecting your car.
  • Underbody coating will eventually wear out, but it gives years of protection from it.
  • Vehicles get protection from debris as they are repelled and kept away.
  • Since the undercoating is often made up of rubber, it absorbs and softens the noises that reach the cabin.
  • Less rusting coupled with slower wear and tear can add years to the lifespan of the vehicle. there would be fewer dents, dings, and scratches on the undercarriage of the vehicle.
  • Underbody coating insulates the interior of the car from extreme temperatures beneath the vehicle providing a comfortable cabin experience.

Cons of Underbody Coating:-

  • Underbody coating will work best on new vehicles that have not been exposed to road conditions.
  • Underbody coating will not help if corrosion already exists and the corrosion needs to be removed first before it can be applied, which can be expensive for you.
  • If you hire a third-party provider to apply an undercoating, you may void the corrosion-perforation warranty which is factory provided, because most of the vehicles today that leave the factory floor are all provided with included rust-proofing.
