Study on Under-body Coating of a Car

  • Underbody coating is the process where the underbody sealant of the car is coated with thick cladding to protect and fight from the external elements like rust, corrosion, Unwanted noise, stone chips, etc.
  • There are many ways to do the underbody coating, such as Spraying and E-Depositing.
  • Spray is the most common method of coating used by the dealers widely. The spray consists a Tar like substance which acts as a barrier for salt, moisture and oxygen, which causes corrosion.
  • E-Deposit is the method in which the BIW is submerged into the E-Deposit bath where the body is passed in certain angle so the the Electronic Deposits as the design requirement.
  • The main purpose of the Underbody coating is to protect and Extend the life span of the car. The better the coating better the performance of the car.
  • The Type of coatings are Wax-based, Bitumen-Based and Resin-Based.
  • Wax-based is an excellent anti-rust coating suitable for all substrates. The wax is applied soft and it Hardens quickly.
  • Bitumen-based coating provides hard-wearing damage from stone chips and corrosion. These coatings also have sound deadning properties.
  • Resin-based coatings i.e. Polyurethanes and rubber coatings are popular type of coatings. They are popular because their elastomeric properties provide long-term stone chip damage and corrosion protection as well as sound deadening effects. These also have the benefit of being suitable for a wide range of substrates and they can be painted over.
ADVANTAGE OF UNDER-COATING DISADVANTAGES OF UNDER-COATING
  • The under-body coating protects the underbody of the car from rust, corrosion, damage from stone chips and also deadning of the sound.
  • Under-body coating a car also prolongs a cars life.
  • The only disadvantage of under-body coating is that itcan be very expensive, and not pocket friendly.
