What is Benchmarking.

Benchmarking - is an vital stage of the design engineering in the pre-design and development phase. There are two Benchmarking viz. Benchmarking I & Benchmarking II.

Benchmarking I - This is the initial Benchmarking that is the comparison of diffrent competitors and the new features we want to add into the car that is to be designed. This procedure is not needed to be as detailed as Benchmarking II

Benchmarking II- This is a detailed procedure of comparing the cars of the same range and features provided by these competeting products in the market. If the Engineer is assigned with the roof of the car, then the Engineer prepares a detailed report of the weight of the material, thickness, Type of composite etc.

Customer Requirement:

• Price range - 8 to 10 L.
• Occupancy - 5 People (4 Adults & 1 Child).
• Routine Usage - Office.
• Vacation / Out-station Trips - Once in a month (aprrox. 1000 kms).

(Also customer fond of bigger cars).

1. Maruthi Suzuki's Ertiga smart Hybrid LXI(O) 5MT. (MUV)

PRICE - Rs. 841000/- (ex-showroom)

PROS:

• ARAI Mileage - 20.3 KMPL.
• Seating capacity - 7 (which can be used as a larger boot for extra luggages.)
• ENGINE - 1462 CC
• MAX TORQUE - 136.8 Nm @ 4400 RPM.

CONS:

• TRANSMISSION - MANUAL.
• FUEL CAPACITY - 45 L.
• SAFETY - 3 STAR, NCAP.

Ertiga another MPV from India’s largest automaker, is one of the most popular models on the market among Indians. Ertiga is one of the best mileage MPV cars in India.

2. Ford EcoSport Trend. (COMPACT SUV)

Price - Rs. 8,89,000/- (ex-showroom)

Pros:

• ENGINE - 1462 CC.
• SEATING- 5 People.
• MAX TORQUE - 149Nm @ 4500 RPM
• FUEL CAPACITY - 52 L.
• SAFETY - 4-STAR, NCAP

Cons :

• TRANSMISSION - Manual.
• ARAI Mileage - 15.9 KMPL.

Ford ecoSport has a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 166 horsepower and 149 pound-feet of torque which is a beast in Performance compared in this price range. Although besides the performance the drive does not seem to be smooth as reviewed by many costomers. Also the Mileage is less.

3. Renault Triber RXZ EASY-R AMT (MPV)

Price - Rs. 8,30,800/- (ex-showroom)

PROS :

• ARAI Mileage - 18.2 KMPL.
• SEATING - 7 People.
• TRANSMISSION - AUTOMATIC.
• MAX TORQUE - 96 Nm @ 3500.
• SAFETY - 4-STAR, NCAP.

CONS :

• ENGINE - 999 CC.

Renault Triber is a great car for Family, the comfort, head space and legspace are perfect for even a 6 footer. It has a 4-star NCAP safety rating and great Mileage which is suitable for long family drives. The look and feel of the car is also amazing in the campared range.

4. Hyundai Venue S(O) 1.2 Petrol.

Price - Rs. 9,50,200/-

PROS :

• ENGINE - 1197 CC.
• SEATING - 5 People.
• ARAI Mileage - 17.5 KMPL
• MAX TORQUE - 114 Nm @ 4000 RPM.

CONS :

• SAFETY - OFFICIALLY NOT TESTED

The Hyundai Venue is a very stylish car with great looks and also comfartable driving experice, which is good for long drives. With a very spacious Boot carrying lugguages is also easy.

CONCLUSION :

My Conclusion comparing the above four cars is that the Best deal is Renault's Triber. This car offers way too much for the price range. Also with Global NCAP rating of 4-Star with a comfartable driving and a larger boot space, for me this car is the clear winner.
