Underbody Coating

Report on Underbody Coating

Under-Body Coating-

Underbody coating-

Undercoating is a coating applied to the underside of a vehicle to protect it from rust corrosion and abrasion.

In another words it is first line of defense between an automobile’s elements and the metallic underside.

Vehicles receive a coating of all the stuff before rolling off the assembly line.

It is typically applied to the frame suspension and body panels.

The undercoating can be applied before or after the vehicle is assembled, but ideal time is when it is new.

It is applied to body panels and the frame suspensions, before or after assembly.

Coat is applied by spraying or brushing, dipping body into coating tank or by rolling.

It lasts for years. But needed to reapply for better

Purpose of underbody coating

  1. To protect vehicle from rust corrosion and abrasion.
  2. Indirectly it insulates vehicle form noise and vibration from road.
  3. Reinforcement to body

Steps of Underbody coating-

  1. In case of repeat undercoating- - cleaning is a must to process.
  2. Primer –usually by spraying or by Deeping in bath.
  3. Undercoating- it’s a two stage process.

First layer is thin layer just to base for final coat.

After it cures, final coat is applied. It will cure hours to days, depending upon environment.

Types of Undercoating-

1. Spray-on "rubberized" undercoating

2. Electronic rust inhibitors

3. Lanolin wax/wool grease

4. Dripless oil spray

Undercoating Cons

Inspection of underside is difficult.

It promotes rusting as it may trap moisture

The process is time consuming, and Smell may be bad.

It is expensive, in salty, destructive environment; it should be on a regular basis, without any visible damage to vehicle.

Potentially dangerous, being toxic
