Underbody Coating

Underbody coating is something which gives protection to the body panels from corrosion and rusting as its a form of dense cladding which is an thermal insulation which is applied uniformly to the undercarriage of the automobiles, usaully its painted or sprayed to prevent damage to the undercarriage.

Purpose:

  • Protection against corrosion: The major purpose for obtaining an underbody coating is to avoid rusting and corrosion. this is necessary not only during the rainy season its required in humid weather also and most importantly its compulsary if the usage is coastal location where moisture increase the corrosion process
  • Protection of critical vehicle components: The car's underbody houses critical components such as engine components, silencer and other wirings these cannot be subjected to corrosion and rust for damage due to any driving conditon.
  • Insufficient maintainace might lower car's resale value
  • Reduced NVH levels
  • Also provides paint protection like its avoids paint from chipping away when traveeling in high speed due to moisture and small stone particles.

Types:

  1. Rubberized coating: This is often regarded as the best underbody covering for the vehile, it protects the underbody from scratches while preserving it. it is not difficult to apply this to the undercarriage.
  2. Asphalt coating: Suitable for heavy duty vehile like trucks when compared to rubber based coating which gives a higher level of protection. This coating contains little amount of rubber sound insulation purposes but this process is time consuming.
  3. Polyurethane coating:This covering seals up breaks and fractures on the vehiles underbody and it also provides high corrosion protection and bonds with the metal. this coating it may be painted over.
  4. Wax coating: This is temporary type of undercoating which will wear away within few months only advantage it is very resistant to moisture and the least expensive type of coating.

Pros: The pros of undercoatingis the protection it gives to the vehicle undercarriage, if the vehicle is used the coastal ares where salt sand and in cold weather these materials can be corrosive to the vehilce. It also adds extra layer protection against rust, corrosion and wear out to the vehilce and its also usefull in hot climatic area it provides protection as debris is deflected.

Cons: The possible drawbacks of acquiring undercoating should be considered while weighing the pros and cons of the car undercoating as it will be the more effective on new cars which hasnt been on any road condition. But in used vehicle it may have residue already on the floor and even rust and corrosion stains. if corrosion is present already undercoating is not assited and even if rust is present removing it and coating will be more costlier.
