Underbody Coating

Coating /Painting in automobile indutries: Automobile industries are specially used ED-Coating and Powder Coating. both are works on electrophoretic deposition method.

ED - coating process: Ed-coating is more similar to electroplating than powder coating. with e coating, the substrate is immersed in a bath that may consist of paint, eopxy or other water-based solution. An electric current is then used to attract the particles that are suspended in the liquid solution and deposite them onto the surface of the substrate. The electrodeposition continues until the desired level of coating thickness is achived, which can be regulated by increasing or decreasing the voltage level. The coated subtrate is then cured in an oven to promote cross-linking.

Powder coating process: While e-coating is considered to be a WET process, but powder coating involves the application of a dry powder consisting of a precise combination of epoxy resins and various curing agents. Aspay gun is used to electrostically apply the particles onto the surface of the substrate. The fact that the particles are electrically charged is what causes them to adhere to the surface. Curing is also used as the finishing step in the powder coating process. it causes the particles to melt and also serves as the catalyst for a chemical reactin that produces the desired finish.

coating to change the surface properties of the subtrate, such as adhesion, wttability, corrosion resistance,or weartear resistance. A major considerration for most coating processes is that the coating is to be aplied at a controlled thickness, and a number of different processes are in use to achive this control.

coatings may be applied as liquids, gases or solids. some deffrent type of coatings materials are present in market.

  • Epoxy coating

  • Polyurethane coating

  • Anodizing coating

  • Alkyd coating

  • Zinc rich coating

  • Custom indutrial coating

Under body coating: Under body coating is usually a dense cladding( often based on rubber) applied uniformly to the undercarriage of the automobile. It is normaly sprayed or painted on when the car is just out of the dealership and is clean. This is becouse it can prevant futher damage to the undercarriage.

Purpose of under body coating : Under body coating provides long term protection from corrosin to cars underbody. It also protects parts like internal body panels, frams rails and other inner cavities that are not physically accessible but are prone to corrosin. protecting the undercarriage of car should be top priority. underbody coating is the sprayed applicaton of wex or rubber based composite onto the entire underside of the vehicle. Its designed to create a rust proof layer between the underside of vehicle surface and the water, salt of the road ( moisture and envirment effects).

for automobile there are some kinds of under body coatings as given below.

1. Rubber underbody coating: This is generally thought of as the best underbody coating for your car. it preseves the under body well, protecting it from scratches. Applying this to the undercarriage is very simple.

2. wax/paraffin based underbody coating: This kind of coating generally used for protection against moisture. It is also the most affordable option out there.

3. Asphalt/Bitumen based underbody coating: This type of coating is generally used for lorries, trucks, and large vehicles, its provides more protecton compared to rubber based coating.

4. Polyurethane/PVC Underbody coating: This coating closes up splits and fractures on the underbody of the vehicle. It offers up great protecton against corrosion and wear . you can paint over the polyurethane coating.

Pros of an underbody coating: Various type of coating have various advantage

1. Rust Prevention: Underbody coating ideally should be applied when the car comes out new from the factory, when there are no dust particles present. This will result in a good adhesive coating to prevent rusting of the underbody surface and also extending the life of the part. it become vey importent to apply this coating when the vehicle is to be driven close to coastal areas.

2.Sound Reduction: Applying thick layers of covering can reduce the sound within the cabin upto a certain digree. for ex. rubber coating can reduce the noise from the tyes, road and debris.

3.Protection against debris: It is one of the primary reasons for applying an underbody coating. During its lifetime, a vehicle travels over debris the entire time, and this is especially true for indian roads.

4.Moisture and environmental protection: A good coating can ensure that water does not enter the components and start rusting prematurely. The good coating retention of water within the parts, which can lead to creation of slush (

Cons of an uderbody coating: Similarlly different coatings also have different disadvantages aswell as.

1. Chalks when exposed to UV light.

2. Low flexibility.

3. Some coating have harmful substance, agents .

4. Skilled workers and protective equipment are nacessory for application.

5. Higher pried/ costly.

6. Added extra weight in automobile which reduce fuel economy.
