Sketch a G+1 residential plan according to Vaastu Shastra and Calculation of Loads as per IS code

Aim : To Sketch a G+1 floor residential plan, according to Vaastu Shastra, and list down the names of the structural drawings required to be provided to the site for construction.calculation of the individual corresponding loads from the members as per IS code.

Introduction to Vaastu Shastra :

Vastu Shastra is the ancient Indian science of architecture and acts as a guideline to design your home in the way that enhances positive energy Our nature is abundant with powerhouses of energy sources like the sun, wind, moon, water, earth and fire.

  • Effect of sunrays, flow of winds, pull of earth's magnetic field and other such cosmic energies A good home needs to radiate the right kind of energy.
  • A person dwelling in a house comes under the influence of a specific energy field which comes under the influence of specific energy field.
  • Architectural changes are not possible for a ready to move in house.

Vaastu shastra requirement/ needs to be followed for a house :

  • Rooms should be preferably be square or rectangle
  • Rooms should be airy, well lit, bright and clean
  • Centre of the house should be an empty space
  • Heavy furniture should be kept in the south-west direction
  • Avoid keeping plants and water features in the bedroom
  • Mirror facing the bed is strictly not allowed. Mirrors in the bedroom need to be placed in such a way that the bed cannot be seen
  • Dining space should be near the kitchen and not near the main door.

Direction to be followed for placing:

(1) kitchen -south-east is best & North-east to be avoided

(2) Staircase - south-west is the best & North-east to be avoided

(3) Toilet - North-west is the best & North-east to be avoided.

(4) masters Bed room - south-west is the best, avoid NE Or SE,

(5) Guest-Room - North west is the best

(6) Living Room - North west is the best

(7) over head tanks - west is the best

(8) underground tanks - North east is the best & south-west to be avoided.

(9) Gate way(Main door) - North is best some times east is best.

(10) Pooja Room - East or N.E

(11) Courtyard - it is a Bramhastan in center of house with top open traditional home in kerala.

PROCEDURE :-

SKETCH OF GROUND FLOOR & FIRST FLOOR PLAN :-

Dimensions of doors & windows :

Main door MD = 1.5x2.5 M

Door D =0.9x2.5 M

Door 1 D1=0.7x2 M

Window w =2x1.8 M

1.Dead loads :

columns

the column of size = 300 x 300 mm

density of rcc = 25 KN/m.

self weight for all columns = L*B* Height of wall for ground floor+ first floor * density of rcc

= 0.3mx0.3mx(3.5+3) x 25

=14.625 KN

self weight of column for uinit length = L*B* H * density of rcc = 0.3mx0.3mx1m x 25 = 2.25 KN/m.

Beams

calculation of beam for unit length of 1m

beam size = 400mm x 400mm

self weight for all beams = B* D * L * density of rcc = 0.4mx0.4mx 1m x 25 = 4 KN/m.

Slab ( assume per unit length)

thickness = 250 mm

span = 1m x 1m

density of rcc = 25 KN/m

self weight of slab = X * Y * thickness * density of rcc = 1 x 1 x 0.25 x 25

= 6.25 KN/m.

wall ( assume per unit length)

assume brick masonry

height of ground floor wall = 3.5m

height of first floor wall = 3 m

bredth of wall = 230 mm

density of brick wall = 20 KN/m.

self weight of ground floor wall = h * b *L * density of masonry = 3 .5 x 0.23 x 1 x 20

= 16.1 KN/m.

self weight of first floor wall = h * b *L * density of masonry = 3 x 0.23 x 1 x 20

= 13.8 KN/m.

total weight of walls = 16.1 + 13.8 = 29.9 KN/m.

2.Live load ( from IS 875 part - II )

Live load for residential structure = 2 KN/m^2

As per IS -875 Part-2, for residential building, Live Loads are taken as :-

  • Living/Dining - 2 KN/m^2
  • Kitchen - 2 KN/m^2
  • Bed Room - 2 KN/m^2
  • Wash Room - 2 KN/m^2
  • Toilet - 2 KN/m^2
  • Store Room - 2 KN/m^2
  • Terrace - 3 KN/m^2
  • Staircase - 3 KN/m^2

3.Wind load :

the load act by the wind on structure is known as wind load. if the height of the structure is more than 10 m needs to be design for wind load.the total height of building is 3.5+3 = 6.5 ~7m. but in this residensial bulding plan is lessthan 10 m so we dont have to be concsiderd wind loads

Important structural drawings for a project required to be provided to the site for construction:

  • Centre line drawing
  • Architechtural drawings
  • Footing and Column layout with reinforcement details
  • Column Schedule with reinforcement details
  • Plinth beam layout with reinforcement details
  • each floor beam layout with reinforcement details
  • each floor slab layout with reinforcement details
  • Lift pit and Headroom reinforcement details
  • plumbing layout details
  • septic tank & overheadtank details

Results :-

  • The plan of G+1 Floor Residential Building is prepared with consideration of Concept of Vaastu Shastra.
  • The load calculations are done as per the IS code considerations.

References and IS codes used for the design :-

  • IS 875 :1987 (Part 1) for Dead load
  • IS 875 :1987 (Part 2) for Live load
  • IS 875 :1987 (Part 3) for Wind load
  • IS 456 :2000 for Reinforced Concrete
