AIM : To determine the Concrete Mix Design for M35 grade concrete with fly ash
Introduction : Flyash is the type of mineral admixtural material for adding in concrete.which is helps to enhance the properties of concrete.it is economical and less cost. while adding flyash cost is also reduced because the cement content will be deducted with replacing flyash. so we are finding the proprtion with flyash as well as study the changing properties compared to normal conrete.
CODES FOR CONCRETE MIX DESIGN:
- IS 10262: 2009
- IS 456: 2000
- IS 8112
- IS 9103
- IS 3812 ( part 1)
OBJECTIVES:
- The main objective is to produce concrete as economically as possible.
- To achieve desired workability, durability and minimum strength of M35 grade concrete.
Procedure :
1. target mean strength = fck + 1.65 * S = 35+1.65* 5 =43.25 N/mm^2 ( table - 1 of IS 10262 -2009)
2. water cement ratio is 0.45 (as per IS 456 - 2000 table - 5)
but based on strength w/c ratio is 0.36 (from graph 1 ).
3. water content for 20mm aggregates = 186 kg ( from table - 2 of IS 10262 -2009)
required slump is 100 but the value is for up to 50 mm. so for additional slump 3% may be added for evry 25 mm slump= 186+ 6/100 * 186= 197kg.
- as superplasticizers are used water content can be reduced up to 20% and above based on experience about 28 %.
- 197 *0.72 =141kg.
4. cemntitious content = water content / water cement ratio =141/0.36 = 391 kg.
based on exposure conditions cemntitious content is 340 kg < 391 hence ok .
- Fly ash content is taken about 30 % in cemntitious content based on trails and experience.
=391 * 30% = 117 kg.
- cement content = 391 - 117 = 274kg.
5.volume of FA and CA
- volume of 20 mm CA based on zone -II of FA = 0.62
- volume of FA = 1 - 0.62 = 0.38
6. Mix calculation :
- a.total volume of concrete = 1 m^3
- b.volume of cement = cement content / sp.gravity of cement *1/1000 = 274/3.15 * 1/ 1000 =0.086 m^3
- c.volume of Flyash content = cement content / sp.gravity of cement *1/1000 = 117/ 2.2* 1/ 1000 = 0.053 m^3
- d.volume of water = water content / sp.of water *1/1000= 141/1 * 1/1000 = 0.141 m^3
- e.volume of admixtures = mass of admixture /sp.gravity of admixture = 7.82/1.145 * 1/1000 =0.0062m^3
mass of admixture = 2% of cemntanious material = 391* 2/100=7.82 kg
sp.gravity of admixture is 1.145
- volume of aggregates = FA & CA = a-(b+c+d+e)=1-(0.086+ 0.053+0.141+ 0.0062) =0.72m^3
- mass of CA = volume of aggregsates * (volume of CA * sp gravity of CA * 1000)
=0.72 * 0.62 * 2.85 * 1000 = 1272kg
- mass of FA = volume of aggregsates * (volume of FA * sp gravity of FA * 1000)
=0.72 * 0.38 * 2.61 * 1000 = 714 kg.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION :
Mix proportions for trail - I
- cement = 274 kg
- Flyash = 117 kg
- water = 141 kg
- chemical admixture = 7.82 kg
- coarse aggregates = 1272 kg

- This trial mix ratio should match the workability ,durability, minimum strength of M35 grade concrete .
