Section Modulus calculation and optimization
SECTION MODULUS:
Section modulus(s) is defined as the ratio of Moment of Inertia about neutral axis from upon the farthest point of section from neutral axis.section modulus is a geometry property for a given cross section used in design calculation.The geometric properties include radius of gyration,polar moment of inertia,area for tension.
FORMULA FOR SECTION MODULUS:
S=I/Y,where
s is section modulus in mm^3,
I is moment of inertia in mm^4,
Y is distance between neutral axis and extreme end of an object.
CALCULATION:
Section modulus of a section is to be calculated only if the section is in closed condition.
STEPS INVOLVED:
- Create plane at exact middle of the hood
- Make a cross section at the middle of the hood using intersection curve at the plane which we have created.

3.Project the intersection curve on the coordinate plane which is parallel to the already created palne and hide the intersection curve

4.Edit the sketch to make it completely closed and trim the inner lines(which means outer panel inner surface and inner panel inner surface)
then find out the moment of inertia using section inertia analysis.
case 1:before optimization
The Hood which was already created is imported and the section inertia analysis is done.

As per the above formula:
S = I/Y
I = MOI (min) value is considered=1.462637694x10^4 (mm^4)
Y = Total distance /2, Total distance =880.00mm
Y = 880.00 / 2=440.00mm
Therefore, S = 1.462637694x10^4 mm^4/440.00mm
s=0.0033241x10^3 (mm^3)
HOOD OPTIMIZED DESIGN:
Increase the depth by 0.5mm,

As per the above formula:
S = I/Y
I = MOI (min) value is considered=1.473610412x10^4 (mm^4)
Y = Total distance /2, Total distance =880.00mm
Y = 880.00 / 2=440.00mm
Therefore, S = 1.473610412x10^4 mm^4/440.00mm
s=0.00334911x10^3 (mm^3)
CONCLUSION:
From the result we found out that increasing the cross-section area would increases the section modulus and helps in increasing the strength of the hood.
