Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Section modulus

  • Section modulus is a direct measuring the of strength of any sectional area of an object about a reference axis (neutral axis).

  • The section modulus (S) is geometric property of the cross section used for designing beams and flexural members. It does not represent anything physically.

  • Strength is nothing but, capable of supporting greater loads, so higher the strength it has a highly capable of supporting greater loads.

  • This strength can measure directly from Section modulus formula, and defined by below formula.

  • Section modulus represented with a symbol of 'S'.

  • Section modulus formula, S=I/Y

S= Section modulus

I= Moment of Inertia

Y= Distance between neutral axis and the extreme end of the object

Case No - 01

For studying the section modulus we need the cross section of hood. For that I created a cross section using intersection curve.

After Hidding Outer and Inner Panel Intersection Curve is Visible Clearly.

Secion should be completly attach, no gaps are allowed while performing Section Inertia Analysis Command.

Created a Sketch and attached inner and outer panel with a line command, trimmed the unneccesary curves and then command of Section Inertia Analysis is being executed.

Here, the minimum moment of inertia, I = 1.425105880e+04 [mm^4]

The distance between neutral axis and extreme end of the object, Y = Total distance/2 = 874.3338/2 = 437.1669mm

Therefore, the Section Modulus, S = I/Y

S = 1.425105880e+04 [mm^4] / 473.1669 [mm]

= 32.598 [mm^3]

Case No - 02

By increasing depth between outer panel and inner panel by 0.75 mm.

Following results has being found -

The minimum moment of inertia, I = 1.387989990e+04 [mm^4]

The distance between neutral axis and extreme end of the object, Y = Total distance/2 = 874.3338/2=437.1669mm

Therefore, the Section Modulus, S = I/Y

S = 1.387989990e+04 [mm^4] / 473.1669 [mm]

= 34.3205 [mm^3]

Conclusion

In this study, we take the minimum of inertia moment to analyze the minimum limit of hood deformation. Thus the section modulus of the hood was calculated and compared with two cases in which we vary the distance bettween outer panel and inner panel and seen the changes in values.

Thus, the result we found out that increasing the cross-section area would give a better section modulus and helps in increasing the strength of the hood.
