Section Modulus calculation and optimization

AIM

Calculate the section Modulus for the HOOD for analyzing the strength of the component and the need to optimize the design.

Tool

NX-CAD

 SECTION MODULUS

Section modulus is a geometric property for a given cross-section It is generally used in the design of beams or flexural members; it is also referred to as the Polar Modulus of the Torsional Sectional Modulus. Other geometric properties used in the design include an area for tension and shear, the radius of gyration for compression, and the moment of inertia and polar moment of inertia for stiffness. Any relationship between these properties is highly dependent on the shape in question, There are Per-defined Equations for some sections like Rec, Square, Circle, etc. There are two types of section modulus, the elastic section modulus, and the plastic section modulus.

S=I/Y

Here

S=section modulus

I=moment of inertia (MM4)

Y=Distance from NEUTRAL AXIS

Units of SECTIONAL MODULUS=MM3

PROCEDURE

Open the Hood Design and on NX-Cad and create a plane for the intersection of the Hood.

Fig hood plane creation

Create the sketch by using the new plane and use the intersection command to get the intersection for the hood

And use the section inertia command and select the sketch

Fig Calculation MOI for the section

CASE-I

Calculate the section  modulus for the Hood

MOI (Max):4.770083x106MM4

MOI(Min):1.3501x104MM4

Distance Of Extreme Layer from Neutral Axis(Y):881.603/2=440.8015MM

\Section Modulus (S)=I(min)/Y

              1.3501x104¸ 440.8015=30.6282MM3

MOI (Max):4.770083x106MM4

MOI(Min):1.398x104MM4

Distance Of Extreme Layer from Neutral Axis(Y):881.603/2=440.8015MM

\Section Modulus (S)=I(min)/Y

1.398x104¸ 440.8015=31.7149MM3

Conclusion:

Hence when comparing cases 1 & case 2

 The section modulus value of case 2 is higher than case 1

In this study, we take the minimum moment of inertia to analyze the minimum limit of hood deformation. Thus, the section modulus of the front hood was calculated and compared with the new design.

From the result, we found out that increasing the cross-section area would give a better section modulus and helps in increasing the strength of the hood.
