Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Title: Section Modulus Calculation and Optimization

Object:

The aim of the project is to find section modulus of the hood design and necessary changes done (Optimize) to increase the strength of the hood design.

Introduction

Section Modulus

It is a geometric property for a given cross-section used in designing of flexural structures and it depends only on cross section shapes of the structures. Section modulus is used to find the strength of the material and with the help of these section the necessary changes done to the structure to increase the strength of the material to withstand the load impact.

Section modulus is the ratio of moment of inertia and the distance from neutral axis to any given end point of the structure.

S = I/Y

Where, S = Section modulus (m3)

I = Moment of inertia (m4)

Y = Distance from the neutral axis to end point of the structure (m)

Calculating Section Modulus for Hood design

Case 1:

Figure 1: Hood design input parameters

Figure 2: Section Modulus for initial Hood Design

Figure 3: Detailed view of Figure 2

Imax = 15307.03067 m4

Imin = 70.0794440651 m4

Y = 238.375 m

S max = Imax/ Y

= 15307.03067/238.375

= 64.214 m3

Smin = Imin/ Y

= 70.0794440651/238.375

= 0.294 m3

The Section modulus minimum is 0.294 m3

Case 2:

Figure 4: Hood design input parameters changing value 25mm to 25.5mm

In case 2 the depth of hood is changed from 25mm to 25.5mm to see the changes of moment of inertia.

Figure 5: Section modulus of hood design after modifying the depth 25mm to 25.5mm

Figure 6: Detailed View of Figure 5

Imax = 22350.30006 m4

Imin = 99.384808183 m4

Y = 238.375 m

Smax = Imax/Y

= 22350.30006/238.375

= 93.761 m3

Smin = Imin/Y

= 99.384808183/238.375

= 0.4169 m3

The minimum section modulus is 0.4169 m3

Conclusion

Comparing both case 1 and case 2 the minimum section modulus is 0.294 m3 and 0.4169 m3. From these two cases the case 2 value is increased 0.5mm by changing the depth/ bend above engine compartment portion i.e is 25mm to 25.5mm and the section modulus is improved compare to previous section. In Case 2 the moment of resistance increases and hence its load bearing capacity (strength) also increased.
