Section Modulus calculation and optimization
Section modulus
It is the ratio of Moment of inetia of section about the neutral axis to the distance of outermost layer from neutral axis.
It of denoted by S ;
Section Modulus can be calculated by using the Formula:
S=I/y
(its unit is mm or m)
Where,
S = Section Modulus
I = Moment of inertia
Y = Distance from the neutral axis to the most extreme end of the object

Total distance between extreme ends =882.13mm
Distance from the neutral axis to the most extreme end of the object (Y): 882.13/2 =441.06mm
Case1

Imax =1.046862215e+07mm4
Imin=4.787005776e+04mm4
Simply
Imax=10468622.15mm
Imin=47870.05776mm
Section modulus(I/Y)= 10468622.15/441.06=23,735.14mm3(maximum strength)
Section modulus(I/Y)= 47870.05776/441.06=108.534099668mm3(minimum strength)
So the strength of hood varies from 108.53mm3 to 23735.14mm3
Case2
When inner panel distance is increased by 0.5mm

Imax =1.046435862e+07mm4
Imin=4.783572114e+04mm4
Simply
Imax=10464358.62mm
Imin=47835.72114mm
Section modulus(I/Y)= 10464358.62/441.06=23,725.47mm3(maximum strength)
Section modulus(I/Y)= 47835.72114/441.06=108.4562mm3(minimum strength)
So the strength of hood varies from 108.45mm3 to 23725.45mm3
Conclusion
|
The strength of the material is directly proportional to the moment of inertia, hence increase in sectional area there is have increase in overall mass of an object ,hence have increase in strength. |
