Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Section modulus of hood

Section modulus is termed as the ratio of second moment of area and distance from N.A (Neutral axis) to the extreme fiber. Also it is the measure of strength of given member.

Neutral axis-ZY plane

S= section modulus

I= moment of inertia

Y= distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object

Initial hood design

Y=438.64mm

Max MOI - 7.258266205e+06mm4=7258266.205

Min MOI - 2.16499155e+04mm4=21649.9155

section modulus, S=I/y

taking Min MOI

=21649.9155/438.64

=49.356mm3

After hood design modification

Max MOI-4.754519423e+06mm4=4754519.423

Min MOI-1.505607243e+04mm4=15056.07243

section modulus, S=I/y

=15056.07243/438.64

=34.324mm3

Changes done

The gap between outer panel and inner panel has been reduced, this induced the icrease in section modulus, thus the strength of hood increse as well.
