Section Modulus calculation and optimization
SECTION MODULUS:
Section modulus is the geometric property of the given cross-section of any shaft or beam structures. It is the direct measure of the strength of the shaft section or the beam section. Higher the section modulus of a structure, the more the resistive it becomes bending. Higher section modulus, the more moment of inertia, more stiffness and thus more resistance to deformation and bending. Section geometry without the needed for adding extra material.
Section modulus(s)=I/Y for max
I= moment of inertia
Y=maximum distance of extreme layer from the neutral axis
it can also defined by the following formula.
M/I = σ/Y
Where M=σ×S
Where σ = yield strength
S= section modulus
Let us perform some iterations on hood to increase the moment of inertia:
MOMENT OF INERTIA ON ACTUAL DESIGN:

Moment of inertia= 3.9502×10^6 mm^4
MODIFIED DESIGN TO INCREASE THE MOMENT OF INERTIA:

Moment of inertia = 3.97752×10^6 mm^4
CONCLUSION:
In order to achieve greater moment of inertia, it is observed that the by increasing the distance between inner panel and outer panel the moment of inertia will be increase. Thus, increase of moment of inertia results in increasing the stiffness, strength and decreasing the stress on the part.
