Section Modulus calculation and optimization
AIM:
Section modulus and calculation
OBJECTIVE:
Use the Section from our Hood design and calculate the section modulus.
THEORY:
Section modulus is to find the geometric property for a given cross section used in the design.
Calculate the section modulus using the formula S=I/y
S = Section Modulus
I = Moment of Inertia
y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object

STUDY 1:
Cross section of the Hood:

Section Inertia analysis:

Here the minimum amount of inertia,I=2.101420858e+06[mm^4]
The distance between neutral axis and extreme end of the object,y=440 mm
Therefore the section modulus S=I/y
S=2.101420858e+06[mm^4]/440 [mm]
S=47.75[mm^3]
STUDY 2:

When I increased the distance between the outer panel and inner panel by 2mm.
Here the minimum amount of inertia,I=2.172967282e+04[mm^4]
The distance between neutral axis and extreme end of the object,y=440 mm
Therefore the section modulus S=I/y
S=2.172967282e+04/440 [mm]
S=49.38[mm^3]
CONCLUSION:
Thus the section modulus of the hood was calculated and compared with the new design.In this case,we take minimum amount of inertia to analyze minimum limit of hood deformation.
From the result we found out that increasing the cross section area would increasing the strength of the hood.
