Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Section modules calculation:

Section modulus is a geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design of beams or flexural members. Other geometric properties used in the design include an area for tension and shear, the radius of gyration for compression, and the moment of inertia, and the polar moment of inertia for stiffness.

z = section modules.

I = Moment of Inertia

y= distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object

Elastic Section Moduli :

The elastic section modules are defined as the ratio of the moment of inertia and the distance from the neutral axis to any given (or extreme) fiber. It can also be defined in terms of the first moment of area.

Use the Section from your Hood design and calculate the section modulus using the formula S = I/y

calculate the section modulus for old hood design:

Section modules calculation:

  • Section modulus is a geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design of beams or flexural members. Other geometric properties used in the design include an area for tension and shear, the radius of gyration for compression, and the moment of inertia, and the polar moment of inertia for stiffness.

z = section modules.

I = Moment of Inertia

y= distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object

THE hood design intersection lines :

value of the hood panel:

min inertia:3.121e+05[mm^4]

length (y):437.7mm

section area:1.400e+0.3[mm^2]

by using S=I/y

S=3.121e+05/437.7

=849.51mm^3

inertia value of hood panel.

Modified hood panel:

  • Taken the running hood panel.
  • Improved that inertia is increased by changing the lengths of the outer panel.
  • Take the outer panel curve and offset at the downwards at the length of 1mm.
  • By using the sketch off the set curve.

Value of the modified hood.

min inertia: 3.265e+05[mm^4]

length (y)=437.7mm

section area= 1.3983e+03[mm^2]

S=3.265e+05/437.7

S=888.66mm^3

RESULT:

  • compare the both modified hood panel and the hood panel.
  • the modified panel is increased inertia around 39.1 %
  • by increasing the outer panel length, the inertia is also increased.
  • INERTIA calculation is done on every part to improve the life and the quality of the product.
  • The modified hood panel has a better inertia result than the old hood panel.
